Boston-based Bruce Katz and his band (Mike Williams on guitar, Rod Carey on bass guitar (and vocals) and Ralph Rosen (drums) began their UK tour at Jagz, Ascot in front of a select but enthusiastic audience last night.
Bruce's Korg (Hammond B3 soundalike) was augmented by one of the most authentic sounding electric pianos I've heard recently. The band played mostly self-penned instrumentals (but also T-Bone Walker, Brother Jack McDuff and Earl Hooker numbers)in the Jimmy Smith style (and ended with Chickenshack as a tribute to the late JS)but also ranged from Jimmy Yancey style boogie woogie to Dr Longhair style N'Orleans piano. Rod did a vocal in each half. This is a very swingign and tight outfit, with impressive solos and ensemble playing without any outward flashiness.
In the interval they stayed front of house chatting to the punters and selling CDs.

[I seem to have pressed "submit" too early!]

If you like your blues jazzy, catch them on the rest of their tour.
Interestingly, they were very impressed (as they should be)in the Sonny Black Band CD (regular readers will know them better as my backing band **BG**) that the soundman was playing in the interval.

(the Greek meze and lamb steak was good, too)
