Subject: RE: Lyr Req: funny irish wedding song From: GUEST,Gerry Date: 10 Mar 05 - 10:04 PM If you're sure it was Irish then it's not Tom Lehrer's When You Are Old And Gray, which you can find at random places on the web. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: funny irish wedding song From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 10 Mar 05 - 10:17 PM Can you remember any of the words at all? Even just a short phrase can sometimes be enough. At the moment, we're quite in the dark. There are so many songs on that sort of subject, and the fact that you heard it sung by somebody who was Irish doesn't mean that it was an Irish song. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: funny irish wedding song From: GUEST,blue willow Date: 04 Apr 05 - 11:33 AM thanks to you all.. i checked tom lehrer's when you are old and gray and Clancy's wooden wedding and the dority song.. unfortunately none are it. but thank you just the same for trying .. i appreciate it.. i remember bits and pieces here are what i can recall but not in the order persay that it was sung and i might not be getting all the words right either.. sorry this is what has made my search tough. something about, will i still love him when he comes home drunk and he gets a beer belly when im getting old and fat.. will i still love him when he cant get it up any more when he just sits around the house. we will still love each other .. it wasn't exactly put in these words that's what makes it tough. im sorry.. but that is what is some of what it says. im beginning to think i wont ever find it. im not entirely sure it was irish either. i just know a guy with an irish accent sang the song. thanks again for any help.. kelly.. timandkelly@pivot.net |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: funny irish wedding song From: GUEST,Brian Date: 04 Apr 05 - 12:01 PM I think she recalls a recitation made popular by Franke Harte D'YER REMEMBER JEM. I believe in one verse the young man meets the lady's family and gets sick all over Gran. Brian |

Subject: Lyr Add: D'YA REMEMBER, JEM? (Heno McGee) From: MartinRyan Date: 04 Apr 05 - 12:34 PM Here's a copy: D'YA REMEMBER, JEM? (Heno McGee) Do you remember Jem when we first stepped out, You'd a pin striped suit and you wouldn't open your mouth. But you really looked lovely, 'cept you shirt was sticking out. Do you remember Jem? Do I remember, will I ever forget? And the day picking winkles on Dollymount Strand. The tide came in and nearly drowned our Gran. And we had to push her home in a three wheel pram. Do you remember Jem? Do I remember, will I ever forget? And the day we went to the Phoenix Park To look at the deer and sit in the grass. And you held my hand and asked for a kiss But I wouldn't give in, cause I knew it was a mortal sin. And then you said you loved me and promised a ring. Do you remember Jem? Do I remember, will I ever forget? And the hooley in house Stephen's night. You met all the relations, and nothing went right. And everybody thought you were mine little brother, cause you looked like Stan. Cept he never ever got sick over Gran. Do you remember Jem? Do I remember, will I ever forget? And do you remember you changed my name? You couldn't find the ring and Gran started praying. And see looked in your waistcoat and poked you around. And when she looked through your pockets your trousers fell down. Do you remember Jem? Do I remember, will I ever forget? And the singing and dancing back at the house. Come to think of it now you were quite as a mouse. But you shouldn't have poured the whiskey in Gran's bottle of stout. I thought she was dead when we found her asleep in the wedding bed. But it was gas, it was grand. And you had to sleep with me brother Stan. Do you remember Jem? Do I remember, will I ever forget? Well its forty years now we've been knocking about. Your much the same, and I haven't changed. Cept me teeth aren't me own and you've got gout. But you really look lovely, cept your shirt's sticking out. Do you remember Jem? Do I remember, will I ever forget? Heno McGee was (is?) a Dublin playwright Regards |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: funny irish wedding song From: Jim Dixon Date: 04 Apr 05 - 02:20 PM There is a whole genre of comical Irish songs about weddings, wakes, christenings, parties, dinners, and other social gatherings which mainly provide the occasion for people to get drunk and fight or do other foolish things. The most famous of them is probably FINNEGAN'S WAKE. I gathered a lot of them in this thread: Lyr Add: Irish songs about balls, wakes, soirees |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: funny irish wedding song From: GUEST Date: 13 Mar 09 - 12:38 AM I was in an authentic Irish bar in Lanzarotte and a 'record' was played. The scene was at a wedding reception and the bride's father was giving a speech. He was meant to be serious but the content was hilarious. I can't remember too much about the content now (too much Guinness has blurred my memory not to mention my eyesight!). But I do remember the bride's father making some acid comment about the gift of a pram. I remember we were all in stitches at the time but alas I don't remember much more. I would love to hear it again. Can anybody shed some light please? Thanks in anticipation, Steve |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: funny irish wedding song From: Jim Dixon Date: 14 Mar 09 - 05:52 PM You can hear an mp3 file of CLANCY'S WOODEN WEDDING made from a cylinder record from 1919 at The Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The singer is Edward Meeker. The Center for Popular Music at Middle Tennessee State University credits Charles O'Connell & Dwight Latham as songwriters for CLANCY'S WOODEN WEDDING. |
