Jed is in New Orleans for a few days, gigging at O'Flaherty's Pub. He'll make a guest apparance on Sean O'Meara's "Music in the Glen" radio program tomorrow morning, Saturday March 12, from 10 to 11:30 am Central Standard Time. That's 11-12:30 "Mudcat time" (EST), and ~ I think ~ 4-6:30 pm GMT.

Sean's program is the only Irish/Celtic program available in New Orleans, on community radio WWOZ-FM, which is available streaming on the Internet at www.wwoz.org.

The station's semiannual fund drive is currently running, which means, on the one hand, plenty of special programming including live-in-the-studio performances, but, on the other hand, a lot of talk to solicit pledges.

Sean, the regular show-host (DJ), is out sick and asked local entrepreneur/balladeer Danny O'Flaherty to substitute for him (which he has done in the past). Danny can't make it either, so he passed the assignment along to Jed, who is currently appearing at Danny's place of business.

It'll be interesting, without the usual experienced on-air personnel on hand, and perhaps with no one even showing up with Irish/Celtic recordings to play. In normal circumstances, a "guest" like Jed might only be on for a quick ten or fifteen minute visit at some point during the program. However, since it looks like he'll be the subsitute "host," he might have to provide a full hour-and-a-half of his own live and/or recorded music. (Minus the fund-drive speechifying, of course.)

I'll be there in the studio, answering phones as a pledge-drive volunteer. Incidentally, I'll be dressed to the nines for the Irish Channel St. Patrick's Day Parade, due to kick off an hour or so after the broadcast. Should be a great day!

Just a little less than 2 hours from now. It will be interesting to see how Jed deals with this "hot potato" of radio shows. WILL he get to play CDs from his car collection? WILL he have to plead for contributions and say stuff like "Hi there! I'm Jed Marum, substituting for your substitute host here at W...thingie"

Should be interesting.

Well, he's not the substitute host and the pledge drive's got top billing, but I did hear Jed say something about 10 minutes ago, and they played a song (White Cockade) off his CD.

Oh never mind. He was supposed to be a surprise guest and is about to play some live stuff.

He sang "Look Ahead Tommy" and "Fighting Tigers of Ireland" (well, he WAS in Louisianna) and "Rosin the Beau". (Not in that order.) They played cuts off the CD. He was charming, the radio show hosts were nice. People who pledged and got the CDs Jed had donated had names that sounded somewhat familiar, but likely belonged to different people. Good show - too short.

As for pledge drives, there was a station once (in DC maybe?) that promised NOT to solicit donations during their pledge drive if people gave enough before it. It worked - it got me to make my first ever donation.

Well, perhaps it's just as well that Jed did not have to carry the program entirely by himself (as Danny O'Flaherty would have done had he not passed the job along).

I hope no one was disappointed that Jed's role was a bit more limited than I had throught it would be. Three songs live in the studio plus another two or three cuts from his new CD was a pretty fair representation, though.

It's unfortunate that Sean, the regular host of the program, couldn't be there. He just had surgery, a second hernia operation to repair something that went wrong the first time around. If Jed and Sean had met in person, I'm sure that Jed would be getting some serious airplay in future weeks. Maybe it'll happen anyway (?)

I was there in the studio, taking pledges on the phone (one from an internet listener in suburban Chicago), and was among the half-dozen-or-so people you heard applauding ;^)

Thanks for posting the thread PoppaGator.

Playing for a fund raising drive can be an awkward sort of gig. The ladies who took over Sean's role sure had a lot to say! They would have done just fine without me. I will try to visit with Sean on a future trip, though.

A few local listeners came out to the Ballad Room for that evening, though - so it was a worthwhile visit to WWOZ.
