Mudcatters,

I'm looking for lyrics to fiddle tunes such as Jimmy Driftwood's Battle of New Orleans, based on The Eighth of January. Are there words to Bonaparte's Retreat, Bony Crossing the Rhine, Hell Broke Loose in Georgia, Pigtown Fling, Mason's Apron, June Apple and any others that you can think of will be gratefully received.

Thanks.

Frank H.

8TH OF JANUARY is THE BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS it's in the DT, so is BONAPARTE'S RETREAT. So is SOLDIER'S JOY, and JUNE APPLE. The man to talk to about it is Kenny Hall. PM me and I'll get you in touch.

Mark Ross

Scotsman Adam MacNaughton wrote a hilarious synopsis of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" to the tune of "The Mason's Apron." It's called "Oor Hamlet" and it's in the DT.

Also, a number of Fiddle tunes have Gaelic songs available.

Thank you all for your contributions. I'm a fiddler and I've learned a lot of fiddle tunes. Sometimes, when I play them, I'm surprised to hear people sing along. I know that they're tunes, not that they're songs. Are there others that people know about? I'd be happy to learn.

Thanks everyone for your help. I'm specifically interested in American Southern fiddle tune lyrics and their historical background but I appreciate the others as well such as Irish and the Westphalia Waltz which I've heard as a Texas fiddle tune.

Thanks again,

Frank

Over the Waterfall has words.

Richard Thompson's MGB GT is loosely based on (I think) a version of Bonaparte's Retreat.

Guy Clark has written a charming lyric for Arkansas Traveler called "Sis Draper". Likewise, Soldier's Joy on the CD "Dark". Not exactly what you're looking for, Frank, but worth the mention, none-the-less.

Hi John, I'll check it out. Thanks.

Splottman, love to know the words to Over the Waterfall. One of my faves.

Q, the Bluegrass Messengers was a gold mine! Thanks so much for that. It's on my add list. Got great background notes as well which is what I'm looking for also.

Frank
