Subject: RE: THE GALLANT JOHN JOE From: GUEST,eimear lynch Date: 04 Jun 09 - 05:08 AM my father ( a cavan man) has been singing this song for 50 years. The Cavan side is Cornafean. |
Subject: RE: lyr help: The Gallant John Joe From: MartinRyan Date: 04 Jun 09 - 05:44 AM One of my favourite musical memories is of hearing a fine Trinidadian singer (called Mary-Anne, IIRC) who had been singing calypso up till then, launch into The Gallant John Joe in a tiny pub in Knockcroghery, in Roscommon. There were old men at the bar, veterans of many an All-Ireland, too thunderstruck to sip their pints! Turned out she was married to one of the eponymous hero's family! Fans of long distance running may recognise "famed Cornafean", the local team mentioned. The tune is floating in my head - but refuses to crystallise. Regards |

(Why do we need more than one Wikipedia, anyway?) Anyway, it says there: "by Tommy Gilronan." |
