Subject: RE: Chord Req: June Tabor's 'Hughie Graeme' From: GUEST,Terry McDonald Date: 21 Mar 07 - 06:01 AM Just checked with my middle son (who has perfect pitch - he must have got it from his mother, not me!) and he says that when the change to F occurs, they're adding an F9 which explains the eerie sound. |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: June Tabor's 'Hughie Graeme' From: GUEST,Terry McDonald Date: 19 Mar 07 - 11:54 AM Playing along with it, it's: Cm Our Lords are to the mountains gone Bb A-hunting of the fallow deer Cm They have grippit Hughie Graham Eb Bb Cm For stealing of the Bishop's mare. then, on verse 3 it's F Loose my right arm free, he says Cm Put my broadsword in my hand There's none in Carlisle town this day Eb Bb Cm dare tell the tale to Hughie Graeme. This is probably the simple version, i.e. more chords can be slotted in but I think the above is a basis to work on! |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: June Tabor's 'Hughie Graeme' From: GUEST,Terry McDonald Date: 19 Mar 07 - 11:41 AM Just had a quick listen to it - she's singing it in Cm, but the unusual bit is when she changes to F for some of the verses. If you capo on the third fret, then it's Am shapes changing to D shapes when necessary! |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: June Tabor's 'Hughie Graeme' From: GUEST,DaveS at Work Date: 19 Mar 07 - 11:05 AM I know that line as "Were all the Graemes here in my court, they'd all be hanged high for me" |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: June Tabor's 'Hughie Graeme' From: Bunnahabhain Date: 15 Mar 05 - 11:15 PM June Tabors version is a slightly anglicised version of the Burns one in the DT. Child 191. The tune it she sets it to is certainly not the DT one, though. If only life were simple... |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: June Tabor's 'Hughie Graeme' From: Tag Date: 15 Mar 05 - 07:39 AM It looks rather different; but I'll try those chords when I get home and see if I can make anything of it! Thanks, Tag |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: June Tabor's 'Hughie Graeme' From: erinmaidin Date: 15 Mar 05 - 07:31 AM Not sure if June's is the same version of the song that I have Connie Dover doing, but if it is...these chords have proven successful for me. G D G D OUR LORDS ARE ALL A HUNTING GONE, OVER THE HILLS AND MOUNTAINS FAIR EM C AM D AND THEY HAVE TAKEN HUGH THE GRAEME FOR STEALING OF THE BISHOP'S MARE (ETC)D AM C D O LOOSE MY RIGHT HAND FREE HE SAID AND PUT MY BROADSWORD IN THE SAME AM C THERE'S NONE IN STERLING TOWN THIS DAY DARES TELL THIS LIE TO HUGHIE D GRAEME (ETC) |
Subject: Chord Req: June Tabor's 'Hughie Graeme' From: Tag Date: 14 Mar 05 - 12:32 PM I was wondering if anyone could suggest chords for June Tabor's version of 'Hughie Graeme' (on An Echo of Hooves)? It's not one of the traditional tunes for these words - I understand that it's based on an Appalachian tune. I think it would be very playable on guitar, but the complexity of the piano chords in the recorded version makes it hard to work them out. Has anyone managed, or shall I go on struggling with the recording and my guitar? Thanks, Tag |
