Subject: Lyr Req: Georgie on the freeways by Tom Paxton From: GUEST,Jackiefas Date: 23 Mar 05 - 11:06 AM Hello I am wondering if anybody knows the lyrics to "Georgie on the Freeways" by Tom Paxton. Would really appreciate it if anyone does. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Georgie on the freeways by Tom Paxton From: Rapparee Date: 23 Mar 05 - 11:12 AM From memory -- someone else can probably do better. The Summer sun was beating down, no pity would it show, George Chester's office air conditioner would no longer go, As () of sweat rolled off his brow he had one revery: To find himself with his wife and kids in his cottage by the sea. He paid for his car at the parking lot which gave the poor man chills The attendant smiled and walked away, thumbing a roll of bills, ... ...He took each bend of the cloverleaf, he followed every sign, And when he came back to that same tollgate, he paid in another dime. .... They say that at night...when the cloverleaf is still, The sound of an engine can be heard, laboring up the hill, It takes each bend of the cloverleaf, it follows every sign, And when it gets to that same tollgate, it pays in another dime. Sorry -- all I can remember. If someone else doesn't post the lyrics I'll try to copy them off the LP, after I dig it out. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Georgie on the freeways by Tom Paxton From: Fred (Beetle) Bailey Date: 24 Mar 05 - 09:36 AM Let's see now hmmmmm... .... The summer sun was a-beatin' down. No pity would it show. George Chester's office air-conditioner would no longer go. As pools of sweat rolled down his brow, he had one reverie. He saw himself with his wife and kids in their cottage by the sea. He paid for his car at the parking lot, which gave the poor man chills. The attendant laughed as he walked away, thumbing a roll of bills. He started his car with trembling hands at the close of a long hard day, And placing himself in the hands of God, he drove to the big freeway. The traffic stretched far as the eye could see as bumper to bumper they sped. They drove at supernatural speeds, which filled his heart with dread. Now and then, they'd stop for an hour or more and a thousand horns would blow. George Chester's eyes rolled back in his head and his mind began to go. He came at last to the turnpike gate and he laid his money down. He took the first turn to the right and followed the curve around. He obeyed each turn of the cloverleaf and he followed every sign, And when he came back to the same tollgate, he gave it another dime. And now they say on a summer's eve when the cloverleaf is still, The sound of an engine can be heard laboring up the hill. A dime drops into the toll machine in the cool of the summer night, And eternally that same car makes the first turn to the right. Think that's fairly close -- been a few years -- Funny that I can't remember the songs I'm trying to learn now Enjoy -- Paxton is a genius! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Georgie on the Freeway (Tom Paxton) From: GUEST,'Ray Bucknell Date: 07 Jul 08 - 08:02 PM I used to sing this at a local Friday night teen coffeehouse when I was in high school. People in the other room couldn't see who was singing, so they named me "Georgie" in absentia. I'd totally blanked on that fifth verse even though I knew there was something missing there. Thanks, Guest, for filling it in. Maybe it's time to update the lyrics, what with current gas prices, inflation, etc. "A buck drops in the toll machine...." Or, maybe Georgie is taking a "staycation" this year. 'Ray |

He paid for his car at the parking lot, which gave the poor man chills. The attendant laughed and walked away, thumbing a roll of bills. The traffic stretched far as the eye could see as bumper to bumper they sped. They drove at supernatural speeds, which filled his heart with dread. Sometimes they'd stop for an hour or more and a thousand horns would blow. George Chester's eyes rolled back in his head, and his poor brain started to go. He came at last to the turnpike gate and he laid his money down. He took the first turn to the right and followed the curve around. He took each bend of the cloverleaf, he followed every sign, And when he came back to the same toll gate, he gave it another dime. His hands were clenched on the steering wheel, his lips and throat were dry. He swore by all that he held dear, he'd make it through or die. He took the first turn to the right, the cloverleaf to go through. He was quite sure of his success, then the tollgate hove in view. And now they say when the moon is full, and the cloverleaf is still, The sound of an engine can be heard laboring up the hill. A dime drops into the toll machine in the cool of the summer night, And eternally that poor car takes the first turn to the right. |
