Just heard a really touching tribute to Micheal Marra on BBC radio.
It was by Billy Kay and he had contributions from many folkies.
All in all, Micheal came across as a gem of a man, loved and respected by everyone he meets.

I love his songs, but have never heard him perform live.

I would appreciate opinions from any who have been to one of his gigs.
Apparently Micheal has had a colourful career, even writing songs for ABBA at one point.....Ake

Saw him live in Irvine about a year ago. Impressive entertainer, and really funny when the mood takes him.

Thanks for the impressions....and the spelling advice.

He seems to me to be one of those rare writers, whos lyrics get right inside you.
Sometimes its a phrase, sometimes just the intonation,or even a well timed pause.
Why is he so neglected by the folk community?
He's like Davie Robertson, one of Scotlands hidden treasures...Ake

Far better to see him live! He has a very dry wit and the verbal intros to his songs, usually said totally dead-pan, have the audience in stitches!
His trademark is the ironing board he carries around to balance his keyboard on, and he also plays guitar. He did a great double act with Scots poet Liz Lochhead, called "In Flagrant delicht" which we saw in Orkney last year.

Saw him about 6 weeks ago at a small local venue, dry doesn't begin to describe his wit, it's positively desiccated, and he had total 'audience control'. I absolutely adore his stuff, and if you like Randy newman you'll almost certainly love MM.
Giok

I am listening to " Like a Heilan Umbrella"... as I type..just magic.
Put it on when I seen this thread title....
I have never seen him on stage but I can imagine his dry wit ...from his lyrics..I love his Music..Love it
The Ironing Board to hold his keyboards.... classic...:>)
I am also an admirer of Liz Lochead's Work. A Duo of their talents would indeed have been a joy to see.
Once again Ake you hit my Musical funny bone....:>)
Blessings
Jude
