If you are a Folk Club Organiser, Folk Performer or member of a Folk Band then you can help with this (hopefully) Nation-wide (Ideally) World-wide initiative in an effort to relieve the suffering caused by famine in the third world.
HOW?
By:- Organising a collection or raffle at your club or running a concert for the cause - or (preferably) both.
WHEN?
Obviously the most important thing is to raise some money to help feed starving people or to buy them equipment to help grow/produce food for themselves - so choosing a time for your concert is entirely up to you. Personally I am aiming for September for three reasons - 1. It is the traditional time for the harvest. 2. It will give me time to organise things effectively 3. It's the time of year when things are 'picking-up' after everyone has had their summer holidays.
I am not a charity and I'm certainly not advocating that you send any money to me. I have set up a web site www.singforsomeoneelsessupper.ukart.com and on it there are links to places where you can 'pay in' any donations eg – The Diasasters Emergency Committee and Band Aid (Though I'm sure that there are many others)
The Web Site also contains a Calendar where you can input the date/details of your function and a Forum were you can input ideas/anecdotes etc.
I will add a link on the site to any organisation/person/band who pledges to do something
When any moneys is raised please forward the information (NOT THE MONEY) to me so that I can add it to the total on the website
WHY I DECIDED TO START THIS?
In January I did some things for the Tsunami appeal and was amazed at peoples reaction and generosity. At Gregson Lane Folk Club we had a raffle - we only had a hundred quids-worth of tickets - miraculously the raffle made £240. Then we had a concert at a local pub - the Landlord put on a free supper - entry by donation - the evening made £500 The next Folk Club, our guest was Anthony John Clarke - at the end of the night the audience screamed for an encore - With AJCs permission, we agreed that he would do an encore if people tossed their change into a bucket - we collected £114

It struck me that we had never done much for the starving people in Africa and that they deserved our help just as much as the people who suffered in the Tsunami so I thought that I would try and organise something. Obviously Bob Geldof has already proved that musicians and music lovers care - I thought that it would be nice to show that Grass-roots musicians care too.

Hopefully the Folk Community will respond in great numbers (Just like you all did last year but one when I organised the petition against the licensing bill.)

Let's show the world that we care.

Graham Dixon

What a good idea. Gainsborough Folk Club would like to be part of it, I'm sure.
