Below is a list of song clips-- sound files I have from various sources-- that appear to be songs we don't have posted at Mudcat or in the DT. (Although it never hurts for a fresh pair of eyes to look in there.)

The titles are as given on the recording the clip is from, plus (for some), any identifying phrase that might give a clue to an alternate title or to identify how it's different from other songs with similar titles. The name of the singer or group is part of the file name, if I had it.

Some of these are listed in my index of spirituals in print-- books I don't have. (I have another pile of titles that ARE in books I have, and I'll post those as I work them up for church.) PM me if you want a fresh copy of the index via email. I have been told it is too big to post.

Please help if you can. If you want to hear the clip, PM me your email addy and let me know which clip(s).

PS, why? Because if it's on a recording, it ought to be considered popular enough to include at Mudcat. (Many of the above appear on numerous recordings.) Also, for 99% of the above, the song is attributed in some way as a "spiritual." Maybe an individual song is or is not a spiritual; for songs in doubt, as you work through the list-- maybe a new "origins" thread for each of those is in order?

Guest j, all you have to do is spend hours sifting through Amazon, CDBaby, and Barnes & Noble online to find the recordings and their sound clips. I'm very lucky that I have the time, the health, and the computer to do it. I'm also very lucky that my tune memory and familiarity with the melodic idiom of the genre make it possible for me to estimate the basics of a tune from a 30-second clip.

Do you have any of the songbooks where these might appear, to help by posting a few?

Actually, with the list above, it's not that hard to Google up the clips, using the song title + artist name.

When I checked Mudcat for what had been posted, Supersearch must have been glitching, because these are in the DT, substantially as sung in the clips:

The text below is substantially as sung by Andre Solomon-Glover, Opera Ebony (arr. Margaret Bonds, art-song style); I've lightly edited to reflect a more traditional folk-perfomance approach. BTW, "Sing Aho" is a typical effort at matching syllables to tune.... I think "Sing-a O" or even "Sing, O" would have been a more likely approach originally and that it became "Sing Aho" via transcription error when first written down for publication. Yes, I took the liberty of making that assessment... what can I say, this is my area of study after all, so people are free to adhere to the later transcription as sung operatically. :~)

Difficult to add notes to spirituals that are scattered through this thread. Here are notes on two.

"NOW WE TAKE THIS FEEBLE BODY" was added to songs of the Jubilee Singers at some point by W. J. Gibbs, the English publisher and christian guest-house keeper (not in original Seward volume of 1872). The Cleveland Index lists 'p. 38,' but in my Gibbs (nd, c. 1900?) it is No. 97. Provenance unknown.

"DE WINGS OB A DOVE," "Sing a ho that I Had the Wings..." was published by Grey, "Fifty Negro Spirituals," a rare book.
'Aho' is a run-together error, not committed by the collector. The sing-a in your text is OK; 'ho' was probably just an emphasized 'oh.' "Wings of a Dove" is a better title.
The Cleveland Index cross-references to "I Wish I Had an Eagle Wing," (not posted) but this is wrong (see Carl Diton, "Thirty-Six South Carolina Spirituals"). I don't have Ballanta-Taylor so don't know if this cross-reference is right or wrong.

If you right-click while hovering on a link, one of the options on the "drop down" should be "copy shortcut." If you just right-click "somewhere on the page" you just get a bunch of options - including "create a link."

If I point to the "Forum Home" link that appears above the Reply to Thread box where I'm typing now, and right click, select Copy Link, and then come back to the input box and "Paste" (I use Ctl-V to paste), what gets pasted is:

That's NOT A LINK, so the "Copy Link" should really say "copy the URL for the link" - but, if I use the copied URL, I can make the link:

Guide My Feet (upthread) sounds very much like another one I know, in melody. How to describe-- OK, the Guide My Feet version in the You Tube video is being sung by a choir, in parts, in what amounts to chords. It's exactly the same chordal structure that underlies a melody sung by the Fairfield Four in their song, Come On In This House. Like many of the spirituals and much of black gospel, melody can be and often is improvised from a basic scale and chord-sense.... you could say that each (lead) singer finds their own melody line while the chordal basis is going on behind them. Anyway, you can hear the FF sing this song by searching in the PHC archives.

The form is call/response. In the below, the response is in parentheses. I do not know the source of this song and I cannot say whether it is a spiritual dating from the 1800's or whether it is a more recent, composed piece in the tradition of spirituals.... the theme of the song certainly could have been used to gather people to worship in the meeting house or brush arbor.
