Following on from the 'Trent and Mersey' thread, I would be very interested to hear of any regular folk clubs or sessions within walking distance of canals (or narrowboatable rivers).

I am fed up of arriving places by boat only to discover there was a folk club on the previous night!

Our boat is based on the Ashby canal but we go all over. The next trip planned is to the dry dock at the end of the Erewash for a dirty weekend (DIY bottom blacking).

Also, I get the impression there are a few other narrowboaters on mudcat - what are your boat names so I can look out for you? (ours is Cally Hanna)

There is a nice little session on a Tuesday night 9pm at The Abbey Inn at Bramley Leeds LS13, just at the bridge where Pollard Lane crosses over to Newlay lane on the Leeds - Liverpool Canal. About 4 -5 miles West of Leeds.

If you're ever down south, on the Herts/Essex border, just off London, our folk club meets a few minutes walk from the River Lea, which allows narrow boats.

Waltham Abbey Folk club. Meets Monday nights 8.30pm. Open nights, with a monthly guest. See website for details.

The Anchor Inn at High Offley, Staffordshire, is on the Shroppie. It's an excellent pub that is the venue for many a good sing & music session.

Cropredy Festival is on the South Oxford Canal at er... Cropredy. There is also a festival at Wheaton Aston on the Shroppie 13th to 15th May Wheaton Aston Festival

We hope to get up to Middlewich this year.

I also believe ther used to be sessions around Audlem on the Shroppie, there was a post somewhere on Mudcat, & I don't know whether Banbury club is still going.

Our boat name is 'Damascena', we're based near Norton Junction, on the Leicester Line, so give us a wave if you're up our way.

There is still a regular Monday session at Audlem on the Shropshire Union. It was at the Lord Combermere, but has now moved to the Shroppie Fly I think, right by the canal.
On Monday night also, the Wilkes Head in Leek, accessible from the end of the Leek arm on the Caldon Canal.
There is often music at the Boars head, Middlewich...see "Trent and Mersey music" for up to date information(hepefully!)

'And of course our North West Leicestershire session is within walking distance of the canal too!'

Well, yes ... I suppose it is.

But to get there by boat would involve mooring up at Snarestone for 10 years while you wait for them to dig the canal through to the disconnected bit at Moira!!

Unless you meant its within walking distance from Snarestone, which is pushing it a bit!

Every Thursday night at the Ship Inn, Haskayne (where? halfway between Southport and Liverpool but not on the main A565 - on the A something or other else running sort of parallel). Right on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and not far from where the first sod was cut. Fairly informal - you don't know you're running the night until everyone else tells you. Officially a Folk Club, but gets like a session at times. Everyone joins in if they know the tune (and key!), or words. Coming by road, take the Maghull to Southport road and turn inland at the Kings Arms. Starts about 8.30 ish. Two guest beers - often Landlord is on, and quite often something from Jennings - and Tetley in cask as well if desperate. The draught cider is Blackthorn.

For the Croxley Green session you need to moor just above Croxley Lock (north of Croxley Green, just before Watford). It's about a half hour walk from there.

I might be out of date but there used to be a club at The Pump House at Watford. Does anyone know if this club is still running?

I believe there is a Sunday club at the Canal Tavern at Worksop - you will need to check in Stirrings (folk mag/website) to see if this is still going. I just tried to check on their website but it is 'down'.

Another one that is definitely still up and running is the Kiveton Park Cricket Club Folk Club. There is a canal at Kiveton but it might be at the end of a stretch of the Chesterfield. If you want to go to that one, PM me and I'll collect you from your boat to take you there. This is a thriving, excellent, well-run club, open EVERY Tuesday (yes, even when it falls on Christmas Day).

Hope this helps a bit.

Rhiannon (ex-narrowboat owner)

Linlithgow Folk festival association have a session every 3rd Sunday of the month in the Balck Bitch pub.
During their Festivalin September (9th-11th this year) they have narrowboat musical cruises on the Union Canal.
Last year we were entertained by the Titanic Washhoose Band: fortunately there were no icebergs about!

This is all great, I shall put a trace on this thread!

Now lets see if I leave on Sunday am I should be able to meet leadfingers on Tuesday evening and be back to work on Friday (or Saturday)

That is the really sad thing BUT it is great to know where they are we often feel inclined to go out when we moor up but often don't know more than the guide book.

Andy

BTW The boat is Vigornia (roiman name for Worcester - NOT some strange erictile substance)- 67' morred generally in Reading. Should be at Banbury in October!!!

Band practices are very strange with everyone sat in a straight line!

I should also say that if you're going for a session in a narrowboat with no PA system (the neighbours didn't want any noise) make sure you sit near the band end if you want to hear 'em: too many people yakking up the back!

The Fox and Hounds in Crookham Road, Fleet, Hants. is beside the Basingstoke Canal - I believe it still houses a Tuesday night folk club.

Usually the club room is used, but on a particularly nice sunny evening, the organiser decided to have the club in the garden next to the canal when Nic Jones was its guest. Nobody bargained for the midges and gnats biting! Needless to say, the second half was reconvened back in the club room.

And don't keel over too early in the evening.

I think the session in the Jemmy Hurst is still on Wednesday nights at Rawcliffe less than a mile from Rawcliffe Bridge on the Aire & Calder where you should be able to moor up for free for a night. Bill Sables would know if it's still running.

Hull Marina is hosting historic keels, sloops, etc for the Hull Folk Festival, 14-16th August. We're hoping to have some sessions on the boats.

There is a monthly (Sunday) session at The Yorkshire Waterways Museum, Goole, but I'm informed it's all singer songwriters.

which rarely includes sessions.

Mr Red's selection (by no means all) see his map & click or see links below for specific locations, scroll down for list.

Rock of Gibralta Oxford canal Thursday needs checking (from the landlord, the barpeeps rarely know what happens on their nights) see Enslow. which includes the Highwayman Kidlington 3rd Sun, Eynsham 4th Sun (Thames) and several Oxford venues, the Half Moon on Sun is Irish, very.

Somers FC Alma Inn Fri is within a mile of the Staffs and Worcs in , the Lamb & Flag is nearer. Farriers 2nd Tues & Cardinals Hat 1st nearer still, all Worcester.
Pickled Plum 1st Mon & Millers. last Tues Both Pershore on the Avon. Wyre Piddle Pidele House 2/4th Mon Avon. 3 Kings Hanley Castle 1 mile from Upton upon Severn (nearer to Severn) every Fri Midday. all found on Mr Red - Hanley Castle radius 15Km

Stratford on Avon FC 1/3 Wed. Mary Arden's Inn Wilmcote 4th Sun, Boars Head Hampton Lucy 2nd Fri all along the Avon see around Stratford

Devizes FC is on the K&A see here and if you get to the end see the areal of Brisel

If you find the pop-up there are controls to predict; dates (where known), distance, OSGR and Post Codes, or you can find by town. Clicking on the right hand column gets a map of the venue and canals/rivers are well delineated thereon. And outside my chosen demesne there are links on the map to listing sites for that region. Having said all this, ring through before making too many plans. Pubs, landlords, breweries, folkies and the recession being what they are, things can change overnight. My datestamps give an indication of confidence.

Let me know if you find any changes,
