We have managed to get to a few in the past, and have always been made very welcome, but we have 3 problems -the internet is variable in reception ie often none -we don't have a car with us - so a local taxi firm number would be helpful. - because a lock might be closed or we hit a busy one - you are never quite sure where you will be on any specific date. Its short days in April so we don't get to travel far. Thanking you for any advice as to where/ when FloraG. |

It's round the room format, songs and tunes, vary varied material. Good visitor moorings. |

It is all derived from one database, map location is via OSGR which can be displayed along with Post Codes, each of which have a (pointer) map hyperlink underneath. If the venue & map marker disappear, I have taken the venue off the list (usually due to information received). This is not a "fit and forget" endeavour. My information comes from local enthusiast's e-mails, and asking people who "go" when seen at Festivals etc. And the area covered is deliberately kept "doable", places I might drive to. No further. And I link to anyone with good information, on the periphery. FWIW I update constantly as information comes in, always carying a datestamp. I am wary of copying from other websites, especially if the audit trail can lead back to me. That would create a self-supporting loop. The problem implicit in FreddyHeady's post and other Folk Maps is that information is not always updated. Indeed when new, the organisers blitz all modes of free publicity, then forget they did that. When the session fades and people loose interest, publicity regarding cessation is not high on the agenda. Crowd-sourced data is like that. |

I was planning not to duplicate any already on the FolkMusicMap site but I've already got some I think. :( Like most little projects that eat into the evening/dawn I probably won't stick at improving/checking/updating this.... though I might persevere depending on comment(s)/suggestion(s). I could just make editing public and let them that are interested add stuff. It's all a bit rough. I noticed late on that Mr Red's site has quite a few contact details which I could paste in. For 'Tuesday' I tried out a table format -discovered it is easy to change headings, not so easy to change the order. It's quite easy to display a bit of info under the balloon. Here it is : test google map I don't know what I've done differently from folkmusicmap but there is a search box on the page. To zoom to a reasonable scale of an area start typing a town's name then click on the town(not a venue). Days are colour coded rainbow-wise(see the Irish Sea). (Sorry, that isn't a row of ferries on the Liverpool - IoM route) |

Mooring by the Waterwitch pub in the town centre, or further north near Moor Lane. Tuesday Irish session in the bar, starts about 9.00pm - great musicians, quite fast! Thursday session upstairs in the Olive bar also about 9.00pm - very varied instruments, very varied repertoire from local Wyresdale tunes from the Winder family manuscripts to wider European tunes and more. Both mainly tune sessions, but appropriate song contributions usually welcomed The Lancaster Canal was initially separate from the rest of the waterways system, but the addition of the Ribble Link https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/canals-and-rivers/ribble-link allows access from the Leeds and Liverpool Rufford branch (short river transit up the Ribble - tidal!). At the south end of the canal. Preston has a mixed music and song session every Friday at the New Welcome Inn, 15 Cambridge Walk, PR1 7TH http://preston-lancashire.cylex-uk.co.uk/company/the-new-welcome-inn-16503129.html , about a mile from the terminal basin (north-east up Aqueduct Street, then left into Cambridge Walk). Always a great night, excellent singers and musicians among the resident crew, and usually supplemented by visitors from further afield. Ross |

Stoke Prior Bromsgrove Bowling Green B'Ham & Worcs, last Sun. Rose & Crown Severn Stoke River Severn Wed every 4 weeks (alternate weeks shared with Bredon 500metres from Avon so select "how soon" for next date) and Astley Burf nr Stourport, Hamstall Inn 3rd Fri. Kiddy area eg Wolverly near Kiddy, the Lock (bit of a giveaway) Mon. Woodman Folk in Ashwood Marina Kingswinford Fri. Modern river navigation would not appear to reach Bewdley (there are sessions there). And Stourbridge Town has an arm of the Stourport canal with several venues - may be 700 metres from it, link above (C & R T map) can show the arm and is navigable still. Folk at Frampton Tues Village Hall & 3 Horseshoes alt Wed on the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal and the Fountain pub is not far from the Gloucester Docks 2nd Sun we have a Cajun Dance with some live music so if you play or dance Cajun you are welcome to join in, and on Wed Lassington Oak MM decamp to the Fountain at about 9:30 and 1st Tues is the rotating Tues sess - 2nd Tues is Englands Glory a fair walk (London Rd). Gloucester Irish Club have a 1st Wed Irish sess. And given a successful push to finish current renovations and a favourable submission to the HLF the Stroudwater will connect to the G & S by 2020 (don't quote me!) see here for the area venues |

Come to think of it, to get to the the CheckMates FC you have to cross the B'ham & Fazely canal in Hopwas. Pelsall FC is about a mile along Goscote Rd from the Wyrley & Essington not sure about the advisability of leaving a boat in that area though, not that I have lived in the area for 35 years, but...... |

I think the session in the Jemmy Hurst is still on Wednesday nights at Rawcliffe less than a mile from Rawcliffe Bridge on the Aire & Calder where you should be able to moor up for free for a night. Bill Sables would know if it's still running. Hull Marina is hosting historic keels, sloops, etc for the Hull Folk Festival, 14-16th August. We're hoping to have some sessions on the boats. There is a monthly (Sunday) session at The Yorkshire Waterways Museum, Goole, but I'm informed it's all singer songwriters. |

Usually the club room is used, but on a particularly nice sunny evening, the organiser decided to have the club in the garden next to the canal when Nic Jones was its guest. Nobody bargained for the midges and gnats biting! Needless to say, the second half was reconvened back in the club room. |

Andy BTW The boat is Vigornia (roiman name for Worcester - NOT some strange erictile substance)- 67' morred generally in Reading. Should be at Banbury in October!!! Band practices are very strange with everyone sat in a straight line! |

During their Festivalin September (9th-11th this year) they have narrowboat musical cruises on the Union Canal. It's about a half hour walk from there. I might be out of date but there used to be a club at The Pump House at Watford. Does anyone know if this club is still running? I believe there is a Sunday club at the Canal Tavern at Worksop - you will need to check in Stirrings (folk mag/website) to see if this is still going. I just tried to check on their website but it is 'down'. Another one that is definitely still up and running is the Kiveton Park Cricket Club Folk Club. There is a canal at Kiveton but it might be at the end of a stretch of the Chesterfield. If you want to go to that one, PM me and I'll collect you from your boat to take you there. This is a thriving, excellent, well-run club, open EVERY Tuesday (yes, even when it falls on Christmas Day). Hope this helps a bit. Rhiannon (ex-narrowboat owner)

Right on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and not far from where the first sod was cut. Fairly informal - you don't know you're running the night until everyone else tells you. Officially a Folk Club, but gets like a session at times. Everyone joins in if they know the tune (and key!), or words. Coming by road, take the Maghull to Southport road and turn inland at the Kings Arms. Starts about 8.30 ish. Two guest beers - often Landlord is on, and quite often something from Jennings - and Tetley in cask as well if desperate. The draught cider is Blackthorn. |
