Subject: Chord Req: Billy Connolloy Songs - Glasgow / W/end
From: Muttley
Date: 30 Mar 05 - 05:18 PM

Back again and looking for chords to two brilliant Billy Connolly Songs.

"I Wish I Was In Glasgow"

Starts: I wish I was in Glasgow; With some good old friends of
          mine.......... (click for "Glasgow")

The second is "Weekend Soldier"

It's a comic song about the "Terries" (Territorial Army) - Over here in Australia we'd call them the Army Reserve (the "Weekend Warriors")

Hope someone can help - thanks

Would a tape be any good to you? I can't work out any chords from it because I'm musically illiterate (or would that be ildotterate?), but I'd put them on tape for you - sung by Iain MacKintosh and accompanied on the banjo, I should add.

Thanks Susanne - I actually have both on vinyl (Yeah, I know: eeeeeeewwwwwwwwww!)

But I can't work out the chords from there either. Have a friend who can - but he's already doing this for some songs by an old mate of mine,

Here are the lyrics, copied from mysongbook.de:

WEEKEND SOLDIER
(Billy Connolly)
[as sung by Iain MacKintosh]

CHORUS: I am a weekend soldier and the world is scared of me.
I've fought a million battles and I'm always home in time for tea.

When I was just a spotty youth, and tired of being ignored,
One day I said to myself, Iain, why are you so bored?
I wanted some adventure, some excitement and some power,
So I went to the local Territorials. I joined within the hour.

I've been in the army for some time now. Even the sausages are nice.
Hey, this is the way to see the world, boys. I've been to Edinburgh twice.
And all you left-wing radicals, don't give me any of your cheek,
And have your demonstration on a Saturday, for I have to work all the week.

I've been in the army for three years now. I enjoy playing at the games,
And when I put my uniform on, I feel like big John Wayne.
My camouflage jacket fits me perfectly but the trousers could be improved.
I have to take three steps or more before they even start to move.

The original words are slightly different.

V2.
I've been in the Paras for a wee while now,
And I must say it isn't all that bad,
And when I get my red beret on,
I feel like Alan Ladd.
My camouflage smock fits me perfectly,
But the trousers could be improved,
I have to take three steps or more,
Before they even start to move.

v3
So watch out all you baddies or,
I'll be on you in a trice,
This is the way to see the world,
I've been to Edinburgh twice,
And all you Left Wing radicals,
Don't give us any of your cheek,
Just have your revolution on a Saturday,
'Cos I have to work in the week.
