Subject: Lyr Req: irish folk song perhaps?
From: GUEST,louise

I am desperate to find the lyrics of a song that my late dad used to sing. I thing it is Irish in its origin. I only have a snippet left in my memory and would love to have it all again.

Alice m'dear will you lend me a spear
To go to the woods, to kill a fat deer.
With a right down bickles and bockles
And straw fish (snort)!

I may have found the song Louise was looking for: it looks like a variation of "William a-Trimbletoe" or William Trimbletoe, part of a counting game.

Here's a version collected in Texas:

William a-Trimbletoe,
He's a good fisherman;
He catches hens and puts them in pens,
Some lay eggs, and some lay none
White foot, speckled foot, trip and begone.
Wire, briar, limber lock,
Three geese in a flock,
Sit and sing till daylight spring,
Till comes the Tod with his long rod,
To chase the Czar, to wig, to war.
Ellison, dear, come lend me a spear,
To go in the woods and kill the king's dear.
Hetom, petom, potom, pie,
Popular, gigama, gi

That is from a book published in 1887. One can view the whole book I think, but it takes a few seconds for the pages to load.

mayomick, I tripped over the following which likely won't be much help but it adds to your post and may stir a memory:
