I was saddened to hear today, and unfortunately somewhat belatedly that Stan Jardine died about 2 years ago. Stan was from the Wirral, and wrote and performed many songs about the Merseyside area, such as The Liverbird Ballad, The Liverbird smiled at me, The Merseysider etc., several of his songs having hints of that characteristically Merseyside sense of humour.

Although I now live in the Midlands, and I never lived in Merseyside, about 15 years ago, for a few months I commuted into Birkenhead from Lancashire, and used to see Stan occasionally during my lunch hours, singing and playing his songs just outside the Birkenhead market area.

He was a superb musician, always willing to pass the time of day with anyone passing in the street, to talk about his music. At a time when the job that I did involved huge amounts of pressure and hassle, I found those few occasions of seeing and listening to him a great way to forget about the pressures of work for a short time.

The Liverpool area has always been blessed with some musicians who were willing to sing in the streets and brighten up the days of the public at large. In my humble opinion, Stan's passing marks the loss of a real musical asset to the area, and the world will be that little bit sadder without him.

Did anyone else see him or know him or have any recordings of his music - I would be interested to hear if you did.

With genuine sadness at his passing,

Tim

I met Stan in the mid 80s on CAD course. He wasn't that keen on the course so he mainly regailed us with stories of his younger years and love of folk music. So I knew that he performed regularly. I then had a chance meeting with him singing by a market in South Liverpool. He told me he was going to be playing in the Yankie bar in the following days. So I went aling with a gang of mates. We had a great afternoon and he had the whole pub singing along. Met quite a few people in the folk music scene after that who knew him and often asked them about him, but our paths never crossed again. He was certainly a great character with a lot of good tales to tell.
