The current understanding is that there will be NO season ticket as happened in previous years.
As you know, each venue is being organised by different individuals who will set their own ticket prices.
This is likely to be the same as was happening 20 years ago when one could "buy one's way around" to view or participate in the events one chose. The only difference is that one pays in the door or possibly, this year, purchase a ticket for a week's entertainment at one venue. We will all know in due course.
Camping sites have been set up as detailed in Newsletter 3.
"There will be a choice of campsites available. For details of the Bulverton site contact Alan White on 01202 734049 or email [e-mail]. For details of the Salcombe Regis and Core Hill sites contact Malcolm Burrough on 01395 579564 or write c/o Thorn Golf Centre, Salcombe Regis, Sidmouth, Devon, EX10 0JN."
I believe the Bulverton site is £40 per person for the week, which is the same sort of price one normally pays for a commercial "greenfields" site. Youths are £20 p.w.
So, the sites are available, the entertainment will be there, you pay on the door just the same as if you go to the cinema, so what else do you need?
Just get out your chequebook, scribble a signature and send it off!

Back to the subject of tickets.

I want to attend Sidmouth again this year but like others I am concerned about the lack of information so far on tickets.

Yes... I know others have said all will be revealed sometime in the next few weeks but all the other festivals I attend have already sent me their annual brochures with ticket and camping prices.

The new organisers at Sidmouth, to whom I wish every success, really must get their act together and fast otherwise some potential ticket-buyers (and not just the negative moaners) will have already booked tickets and camping or accommodation at other festivals.

Once people have booked their holidays they seldom cancel and go elsewhere. The same applies with festivals.

To use the mis-quote above, I'd rather be "doomed" and go out singing in a blaze of glory along-side like minded folk than sit back with a smug 'I told you so' smile as the last embers of a once great festival fizzled out for the last time and bemaon the loss of something that I profess to care about.

If you care about, and want to see the return of, the International Festival then stop deriding those who are trying to keep the tradition alive by organising a 'different' back to grass roots festival this year. If this years festival was not taking place it would be much harder to get it off the ground next year as many regulars would have found another fixture to fill the void.

Please only post positve messages for Sidmouth if you really care, if you want to detract from Sidmouth please start your own thread called 'Sidmouth Miseries' or similar.

A sneering denigration of session performers, you must surely agree, and ill informed to boot. Most of us spend money on concert tickets and workshops, as I have said before.

And you accuse us of sneering at him for "disagreeing with us".

You are right in saying that this year, only the most committed will attend. What we are committed to, however, is precisely the inclusive festival you mention (inclusive, among other things, of the very arena concerts we have been assumed (wrongly) to care little about).

The Sidmouth supporters have been much more sneered AT, than sneerING. In almost every thread, we have been disparaged and belittled by posters who obviously want Sidmouth 2005 to fail, and fail catastrophically.

We have been at pains to indicate that we, or at least most of us, will be as sad to see no arena shows as anyone.

Given that we can't have the usual festival this year, we can react in a number of ways:-

1. Go somewhere else.

2. Keep what we can salvage going, and work towards rebuilding the lost aspects in the not too distant (we hope) future.

3. Advocate a complete withdrawal of all activity related to a music festival, and carp, moan, and cavil at anyone who seeks to take the positive way, and choose option 2.

We have no problem with those who decide to choose option 1. It is their right, so to do, and we hope that they will want to come again to a future Sidmouth which contains more of the elements they desire.

We are the people who have chosen option 2. It is our right so to do, but it seems that we must run the gauntlet of ill informed, and unconstructive criticism, as our punishment for disagreeing with those who opt for option three.

Small wonder then that we occasionally get somewhat frustrated with the negative, unhelpful attitude of some posters.

Several threads have been hijacked by them, to the extent that discussion of the topic has been all but impossible.

Which of the three options do you consider most likely to guide Sidmouth in the direction of its former glory?

I believe the answer to that is obvious, so why don't they just let us get on with it.

In the unlikely event that 2005 is not a success, I for one won't be asking them to wipe the egg off my face. I will have the consolation of knowing that I did my share, and TRIED MY VERY BEST. Nobody can do more than that.

Going back to dear Rolf Harris got me thinking again. Oh No! you all cry! ;0)

I remember reading somewhere, think it was Folk on Tap, that Steve Heap said that booking Rolf Harris for Sidmouth was one of the biggest risks he'd ever taken, and he came in for a lot of criticism for it, yetRolf turned out to be one of the most successful people Steve had ever booked, with The Arena being packed out.

I suppose you could liken that to Sidmouth Folk Week too. Never has any poor Folk Week, anywhere in the world, probably, come in for so much criticism......yet....just like Steve with Rolf....you wait and see what happens! At least Gordon Newton doesn't have to panic about the weather, as he has The Marquee. I admire people who are willing to take risks like that! I admired Steve Heap when I read that and it also goes for this year's Organisers too!

And then, of course, Rolf got me thinking about Kangaroos again, (!) and that also brought me back to Sidmouth, as never before have so many people tried to 'jump up and down' on a Folk Festival to kill it off....and FAILED!

Maybe we should refer to all the negative 'Guests' as 'Sidmouth Kangaroos' from now on!

By the way.....don't forget that if you want to join The Sidmouth Supporters Club, which gives you priority booking and discount at selected events, you have to join before May 1st.

Why do the so-called supporters of Sidmouth have to sneer at anyone who disagrees with them?

Surely we should all be trying to maximise the attendance at Sidmouth 2005 instead of telling those we disagree with that they should go elsewhere.

I want Sidmouth to remain an inclusive event where our love of music is shared with as many people as possible.

Reading all the threads on mudcat makes me fear it will be the exact opposite, a much smaller exclusive event attended by only the most committed.

Fair enough, but once you have discovered that it isn't the thread you hoped it would be, why don't you do as I do in such cases. ignore the thread thenceforth. If Lizzie chooses to show her excitement by drivelling meaninglessly, that's no reason to piddle on her fireworks - go and get your own fireworks and keep them dry.

Agreed, it cannot be the same Sidmouth as in the past. People will have different views on that to which they are entitled. I may well come to Sidmouth for it's intimate sessions and then to Cropredy for its large non-stop concerts. The fact that we see things differently should be no reason to attack those with a different view.

I've not seen many threads that don't creep off topic - even serious ones - so why the concern about references to TV shows. You know that is not what Lizzie started from and it is not what the thread is about. It's a conversation, for goodness sake, between people who think Sidmouth is going to be fun despite the detractors.

Rolfnut, sneeringly refers to people in the sessions "I'm sure you'll enjoy the sound of your own voices". What arrogant condecension. When I go to a session (and I'm well aware that I'm not of professional standard) I go to contibute because that is my understanding of what folk music is about. I also, and more importantly I go to listen to all the other contibuters - and perhaps pick up some tips to improve my own performance. Rolfnut obviously sees folkmusic as a "spectator" sport. He is entitled to do so but that doesn't give him any right to sneer at those who think "folk" means "people".

I agree that seeing your favourite artists is a good and valid reason for attending any festival, but don't quite understand your sneering and dismissive attitude to "Amateur Sessions".

You say that you have been going to Sidmouth for twenty years, and yet you haven't realised that you could have enjoyed many of those favourites much earlier. With the exception of Rolf, who was lucky enough to be discovered early in his career by the TV people (I am, by the way a committed Rolf fan), most of the people you like started out in the very sessions you disparage.

I cannot see the reasoning behind your refusal to even look at the venues most likely to feature those you will pay to see in years to come.

The sessions at Sidmouth are not loaded with untalented rank amateurs, as you would know if you had ever taken the trouble to see for youself.

None of us are kidding ourselves that it will be the same. Nor has Lizzie ever said that the loss of the arena is a good thing, but there's nothing we can do about it, so the only thing we CAN do is go, be positive and enjoy ourselves. Anyone who does anything with the intention of having fun will almost certainly do so. Anyone who does anything with a negative attitude and expecting to be disappointed almost certainly will be.

I have been a regular visitor to Sidmouth for some 20 years but it is the international shows in the arena I enjoyed as well as the open air concerts featuring well-known artists like Rolf.

I have never sung in an amateur session and don't intend to start now.

To those who only go to Sidmouth to listen to themselves, good luck. I'm sure you'll enjoy the sound of your own voices.

The many thousands who went to Sidmouth for the arena concerts won't disturb you. We won't be in Sidmouth this year because there is sadly nothing of interest to us.

It's obvious that ther detractors of Sidmouth Festival, such as Bunny Boiler and Rolf Nut, only seem to think of the Festival as the shows which have been put on in the Arena.
Do they not go to the sessions, singarounds, workshops, ceilidhs, concerts in the Bedford, the Church, the Manor or other places?
I understood that Folk festivals were about DOING things which often one did not have the chance during the rest of the year. The big performers can often be seen at other venues diring the year.
If Rolf nut is so keen on seeing Rolf Harris why not see him at one of the other festivals AFTER having had a great time at Sidmouth?

Nice one Frank! I can't see that these threads should put anybody (except a total deadhead) off - as you rightly say, if they do, then the reader would not have gone anyway!

For the first time in years, I am really looking forward to the festival this year, because it isn't going to be about the big names, and having lots of big concerts. It will be far more for the guys like us, who want to enjoy ourselves singing and playing.

And Lizzie - playing and singing up in Knowle Park sounds brilliant! - but not going roly poly at the same time...

Firstly, Lizzie started this thread and she has kept to the topic of it so why should anyone be worried by it.

Secondly, I don't think I'm the only one who is more turned on to Sidmouth than turned off it by Lizzie's silly sense of humour.

Thirdly, anyone who is turned off a festival because ther might be a couple of silly people going, probably wouldn't be going at all.

Fourthly, why is it that people who find Lizzie off-putting, spend so much time complaining about her? There are other threads and people can always start one of their own if they're that worried.

Fifthly, If bunny boiler's lack of humour and/or toleration become the hallmark of Sidmouth, that'll really put people off going.

Sixthly, I can't see where Lizzie has disparaged the previous festival. Maybe that's because I'd have to trawl through so many unnecessary complaints about her in order to find them.

Seventhly, lighten up, please, bunny!

Well what a lot of fuss and palarva. I ain't never been and this year I might. All I want to do is ceilidhs and sessions and that looks a bit dispersed. Anyways - if I am there it might not be that easy to spot - I have been acused of being at Sidmouth over the years so maybe it is a rouge magnet.

Never having done a whole week I don't know if I can survive the excitement. Perhaps I will be considered as a GUEST for the first year so I can slag off it and the festival goers.

Right then...I'm putting my 'Serious Excitement Hat' on here.

What am I looking forward to at Sidmouth this year?

Well....my young lad has recently started to try and play the fiddle, Phil Beer and Seth Lakeman are two of his heroes, so we'll probably be going to some of the workshops being put on by the music students from Newcastle University. Sidmouth Town Council is donating money towards the children's workshops this year. So that will be fun down in Blackmore Gardens.

I love watching the Morris Dancing and there are loads of teams coming down this year, so that's another thing on my list. The concerts on The Ham...well they go without saying...loads of artists that I really love or have wanted to see for ages.

AND I'm just excited to see what is going to happen!

The craft stalls are going to be done by local people I understand, I'd got a bit fed up with the same old Arena shops/crafts year after year....so that'll be a nice change. I'm excited about what is going to happen in Knowle Park, (The Arena) whether people ARE going to take their music and dancing up there and just do 'whatever they want'.

It'll do the grass up there good to have a rest too! Did you know that every year, after all the Festival things have come down...the grass is all dead....has to be re-turfed. So nature can have a break this year.

I'm also excited to see the future plans for The Arena. I noticed on the other thread that people thought the Arena would never come back, but I don't think that at all! There's a VAST FLAT area in Knowle Park. Why not put a marquee on the flat bit instead? Then rain or shine its all OK!

My back used to ache so badly sitting on that hill. Don't get me wrong, I used to love the view etc., but it was so uncomfortable and if it rained you started to slide down it! It is tremendously steep.
Great for roly-polying though! ;0)

And I'm excited about the colours, the sounds, the way my town will change for a whole week. And hearing Sandra Kerr's Festival Choir and John Kirkpatrick's Festival Band.

AND taking those torches for Gordon Newton and Eddie Upton and watching them being carried to the sea and the flames being laid to rest with the blessing of Sidmouth 2006 upon them.

AND I'm looking forward to knowing how much Sidmouth 2005 is going to raise towards Sidmouth 2006!

Only 113 days to go......

Sadly there is no Sidmouth arena for Rolf to appear in this year and the marquee on The Ham wouldn't be big enough for him.

However you can see Rolf and his band at the Stroud and Eastleigh Festivals over the weekend of August 6 and 7, also at the Towersey Festival (still organised very efficiently by Steve Heap and Mrs. Casey Music) at the end of August.

Anyone who enjoyed seeing Rolf at Sidmouth should go and see him at one of those Festivals this summer instead of Sidmouth.
