Dick and I will be coming to Whitby Week this August. The first time we went, we flew to London and visited Southern mudcatters.   The second time we came over, we flew to Glasgow and visited Northern mudcatters. We have not yet bought plane tickets. We do have a cottage.

Who would like us to visit with them this time? You can post or PM. Are there other folk events right before or after Whitby?

We look forward to seeing lots of you at Whitby.

Hi, I would have thought Manchester would be a good destination to fly into. There is a lot to see in the North. The weekend before Whitby there is Saltburn, just up the coast, the week after (bank holiday weekend) there is Saddleworth Rushcart & Bridgenorth & Towersey festivals. Then 1 week later Fylde Festival.

Susan and Dick. I haven't ever got to the Sadleworth Rushcart because it follows immediately after Whitby and I am usually trying to recover from Folk Week. The one I have done is Sowerby Bridge Rushcart which happens the following weekend. These are not manufactured "Folk Events" but part of a real living tradition and worth seeing. That said, there is also plenty of music, dance and singing associated with them.
Both Saddleworth and Sowerby Bridge are in parts of the Pennine Hills with outstanding scenery.

Whilst you are at Whitby you really ought to try and take a short run (21 miles) up to Guisborough to the Globe - aka theMudcat Watering Hole - and sign in the Mudbook.

Can you tell us more about the festivals Les mentioned? websites? distance from Whitby? We are into traditional music. I like vocal and he likes both vocal and instrumental.

Tig - What nite does the Globe have music?

Oombanjo - Dick plays banjo and will probably bring over the small, but does not walk around with it that much.

Geoff - I'm sure we will run into you there

Micca - we should have a car. it is hard to get around chunks of the country otherwise. If we come in thru London, we will surely come by and a session at the black Lion would be welcome.

We will not be going to Whitby this trip, but I will be the guest artist at Four Fools Folk Club in Adlington, Lancashire on August 15th. Perhaps we can find a time and place to stop and share a moment during our trips. Keep in touch.

Whitby: August 19 - 26.

At the weekend immediately following (26-29 including bank holiday Monday) you have a choice of big festivals: Bridgnorth (nearest), Towersey, Cornwall (furthest).

Can't offer accomodation this time Guys - Sorry! We already have transatlantic visitors (Cousins from Illinois) from the middle of August to early September!

I would certainly recommend the Fylde Folk Festival - 2/3/4 Sept 2005, but if you want a weekend ticket - buy early! You could do the coast to coast drive, Whitby to Fleetwood. Something you could not accomplish easily back home:-)

Let us know your whereabouts and I will try and catch you someplace anyway.

Is it possible to drive from Whitby to Cornwall - Wadebridge/ Bodmin/ Plymouth - in a day? There are motorways from Leeds to Exeter - not a great way to see the country, but a great way to make time.

We are still figuring out how to put this together. When it comes closer, we can stare at eash others pictures. We wear mudcat shirts a lot. The place I know I will be every day is the ballad workshop at 1 pm upstairs in the conservative club, if they have not moved it. I don't know whether they want us to do a workshop on the DT again.

Dave - are you going to Whitby?

I was looking at the various festivals from froots, but am not familiar with most of the performers. Who hgas lots of trad?

It's a long journey but possible. You'd want to cross to the M6 and them pick up the M5 by Birmingham.

Susan, I would say that that would be about an 8-9 hour drive, with no stops and no holdups- and our motorways are famous for their delays. Then when you add in travelling to Cornwall in August... no, I wouldn't recommend it, unless you like traffic jams.

If heading south when leaving Whitby though, it is a good idea to go via Guisborough to get onto the fast roads quicker (even though you're heading in the wrong direction to start with) so a stop off at the Watering Hole fits in well!

So Cornwall is out. Tentatively fly to London, stop by Micca, Anahatta, probably Bill Sables. Thinking about a festival after Whitby. We will see how this shapes up. We are off to NEFFA for this weekend.

I was putting together the itinerary and driving directions. It looks like:
Arrive at Heathrow Tues morning Aug 16, go to Micca's
Wed, drive to Cambridge, visit Anahata and Mary
Thursday, drive to Bill & Lorna Sables in Goole,
    stay until Sat morning
Go to Whitby for the week
Naemanson and wife will join us at the cottage at some point
Sat August 27, start driving South, no destination that day
Maybe stop in at the singing barn in Towersey on Sun
Stay at B&B near Wallingford Sun
Mon Aug 29, fly home

Barn at Towersey is well worth a visit ! Admiral runs the sing (Another Catter) and there is usually a fair Cat turnout ! I am normally there on the Sunday myself , so will keep an eye out !

I see some comments about Saddleworth Rushcart earlier in this thread. If you want to catch Rushcart - and I would highly recommend it - please note that it is this coming weekend, 20/21 August, not the weekend of the August Bank Holiday. Rushcart is always the second Saturday after 12 August and so doesn't always fall at the Bank Holiday.

Progress report: Dick and Susan have been fed and watered here in the heart of East Anglia (we had a few tunes and songs as well) and were pointed in the direction of the A1 this morning together with precious cargo of Mudcat T shirts, so by the time you read this they should have found Bill Sables' residence and be preparing for the final short hop to Whitby.

See you all there, Saturday afternoon onwards!
