Subject: RE: Folk Lyric Request From: kentr@falcon-nw.com Kent Reeves Date: 13 Oct 96 - 12:39 AM I had a great uncle from Guernsey, England who used to sing a song about a sea captain who was chased by a woman. The only verse that I can remember went: " She chased him, pursued him, she would not let him rest. 'Til Captain ....... ?" This song has haunted me for fifty years. Can anyone provide me with the lyrics? Thanx :o) |

Subject: RE: Folk Lyric Request From: dick greenhaus Date: 21 Oct 96 - 06:51 PM I THINK the song you want is Four Jolly Sailormen. Stanley Holloway sang it; if I find my record I'll add it to the Digital Tradition. |
Subject: RE: Folk Lyric Request From: rbrundy@pop3.concentric.net Date: 23 Oct 96 - 09:29 AM I'm looking for a song for my dad. It's about a soldier who uses a deck of cards as his bible. Possibly country music song 50's - 60's. Help! K.L. |
Subject: RE: Folk Lyric Request From: dick greenhaus Date: 23 Oct 96 - 10:14 PM It was called "Deck of Cards"; recorded by (I think) T. Texas Tyler. MIght be in some older country music collections. I'll look. "This is a true story. I know, because I was that soldier." |
Subject: RE: Folk Lyric Request From: ravensteel@usa.pipeline.com Date: 24 Oct 96 - 01:10 AM Hi! I heard what is probably a black gospel song this weekend, and am looking for complete lyrics. I don't know if it's ever been released as a recording (I heard it on tv). I think it might be called "The Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place", but I'm not sure. Part of the lyrics go: I went to the rock to hide my face But the rock cried out "No hiding place, No hiding place down here." Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, L. McBride |

Subject: RE: Folk Lyric Request From: Sorcha Date: 16 Jul 00 - 10:12 PM I think the last is called "Sinner Man". Sinner man where you gonna run to, (etc.) Run to the rock but the rock, (etc.) If no body else comes up with some thing better, I will post it all. Strange thread............. |
Subject: RE: Folk Lyric Request From: SeanM Date: 17 Jul 00 - 01:54 PM Check the Supersearch for the "Deck of Cards" tune. I seem to remember a thread or three about it (I'd do the search myself, but am at work. Maybe someone with more time will?) M |
Subject: RE: Folk Lyric Request From: Big Red Date: 17 Jul 00 - 10:23 PM NO HIDING PLACE is an old spiritual. The only recording I have is a recording by the Wayside trio in the 60's. They combined LIVE A HUMBLE, SWING LOW SWEET CHARIOT and HIDING PLACE into one song. Let me know if you want it. Good song. Good album. |
Subject: RE: Folk Lyric Request From: JedMarum Date: 17 Jul 00 - 10:53 PM Spider to a Fly is one I pull out of the hat every now and then. The Stones recorded it way way back, maybe 1966 ... it seems to me it was on the same album as the Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man.

Subject: Lyr Add: NO HIDING PLACE From: Bugsy Date: 17 Jul 00 - 11:01 PM Well, L McBride, you've sure hit a chord deep down in my memory there. I used to sing this way back in the 60's. As I remember the words: NO HIDING PLACE CHORUS: There's no hiding place down here There's no hiding place down here I ran to the rock to hide my face The rock cried out "no hiding place" There's no hiding place down here. Sister Mary she wears a golden chain Sister Mary she wears a golden chain Sister Mary wears a golden chain Every link in Jesus' name There's no hiding place down here. CHORUS Oh the Devil he wears a hypocrite's shoe Oh the Devil he wears a hypocrite's shoe Oh the Devil wears a hypocrite's shoe If you don't watch out, he'll slip it on you There's no hiding place down here. CHORUS Sister Mary she wears a golden chain Sister Mary she wears a golden chain Sister Mary wears a golden chain Every link in Freedom's name There's no hiding place down here. I'm sure there must be some other verses but I'm afraid that's all I can remember. Cheers Bugsy
