Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Little Mr Baggy Britches From: GUEST,Kylie Date: 08 Apr 05 - 08:16 AM Thanks so much for your help. The key word was "breeches" instead of "britches", which also led me to "leetle" instead of "little". Low and behold I found a link straight to the original sheet music from 1915. Link below for anyone interested. Thanks again. www.nla.gov.au/nla.mus-an12852185 |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req/Add: Little Mr Baggy Britches From: Bob Bolton Date: 13 Sep 11 - 09:06 PM G'day Averil, Where did you hear the song? It seems that the only country associated with this song, in the posts above, is Australia (apart from the "Dutch Girl / Dutch boy characters and "accent") and I'm wondering if I can unearth my late Dad's notes from helping assemble the first Australian 'Boy Scouts Songbook'. Apart from that, there is the knowledge that one great-great grandfather (Jan van Kampen) in my sketchy family tree was described as a "Sailor, Holland" on the 1854 wedding certificate. I'm presuming that he had 'jumped ship' to try to find his fortune on the Ophir Goldfields in the early 1850s. Regards, Bob |

It has been around a long time. We use to sway to the music and a dutch boy was singing to the dutch girl and the rest of us sang the chorus. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req/Add: Little Mr Baggy Britches From: GUEST,Geoff Emerson Date: 23 Apr 14 - 07:14 AM I'm almost sorry to have found this. The chorus was regarded as one of our family songs that seem to have started with my grandfather and passed down by word of mouth through the generations. Our version goes: Mr. Baggy Breeches, I love you. If you'll come and be my Sunday fellow I'll patch them with purple, with pink and with yellow, And folks will say, as we sit on the old sea wall Jak's been patching his breeches, 'til he's got no breeches at all! Ah-ah ah-ah ah-ah, Patches big, patches small, Ah-ah ah-ah ah-ah, 'Til he's got no breeches at all! I'm sure we haven't got the tune quite right either - such is the aural/oral tradition! I've never known anyone else that knew this song and while it's a delight to see that other people love it, having to admit that my father and grandfather might have got bits wrong could shake the family to its foundations! :-) |
