G'day 'Tourmaster'

I'll see what any other speedy song-pluckers have found when I'm next near this site (about 4 days hence). I do have a recording of one of Ralph McTell's earlier Australian tours, when he sang this song.

Regards,

Bob Bolton

Ok, Here we go:

I've written words that say I'm leaving. Words express the pain.
Old songs lose their meanings but new ones they gain
From changes that I've been through and what I'm coming to,
You are my first song and I still....

Sure I still get feelings to get back on the road
And I still get leanings to forget the things I know
About myself and changes gone through and coming to,
And you were my first song and I still....

Do words express true meanings, I mean the words are still the same
Old loves lose young feelings but new ones they gain
From changes that I've been through and new ones I'm coming to,
And you were my first song and I still....
You were my first song and I still....
Yes, you were my first song and I still love you.

I have taken these words from a recording, so I am 99% sure of all the words. If you need the chords and/or melody, let me know.

Paul

This song refers back to one on his first album about his wife - Nana's Song.

Friend of mine was in a pub in Cornwall having a sing with Ralph one evening, the landlord told them to shut up, he wanted to put the jukebox on - first record played? - Streets of London!

hey tourmaster, I'm not worried myself about practicing at work, I do it all the time! I've even learned how to play the accordian at work, and I get paid for it too!!

I work with seniors in an Intermediate Care Facility doing music programs as a Music Therapist. I get paid to sing all these great songs from the early 1900's. Definitely a good job!!

G'day again,

I'm glad to see that the speedy MudCat surfaced with the words long before I was back at this keyboard!

Hi, Bemalu ;o)

I just noticed your request from last year here at www.mudcat.org
for chords for Ralph McTell's First Song - one of my favourite songs.

So here you go - I actually heard him singing this great song live - along with all his other fantastic songs and amazing guitar playing - only a few weeks ago here in Denmark. I actually went to 3 concerts in one week (!!!), since I hadn't had a chance to see AND HEAR the great man himself live for 19 years.

And it was AWESOME every time ! So if you ever get a chance to go to a concert with Ralph, then for the sake of your own good please do. You wil never regret it ! An amazing firework of lovely and superb songs played by this great guitar virtuoso and sung with his gentle, playfull and precise deep voice in a very warm, cosy and humouristic atmosphere. If people only knew what, they are missing, if they only know Streets of London .... :o)

Well, I do have to go back and practice some more - a LOT more ! :o)

First song   - Ralph McTell

(D)          D             (A7)Bm       F#m

Yes, You were my first song--

and I---- still... lo-ooo-ove you

[ From "The Songs of Ralph McTell" -
Essex Music Int. Ltd. & Misty River Music Ltd. - 1976 ]

Try Em7 instead of Em9 - sounds better, so probably an error -
It also fits the finger picking better !

Enjoy - I hope it works out fine for you - and others ;o) -
as it has for me :o) It's one of my favourite songs to "perform".

It also has a great AND even playable tablature !
("finger picking scheme") - So do try experimenting with
finger picking on the chords - just using thumb and index finger
and getting the feel for it will make it sound of a lot !

Sosorry about the position of some of the chords -
they slid a "little bit" out of place after
submitting the message, but it should be relatively
straight forward to figure out where they rightly belong.

I think the correct spelling is Nanna's Song. Seems not to make a difference in Google searches. Haven't found chords.
