Does anyone know where I can find a backing track for Whispering Grass (Either the original or Sandy Denny's version, NOT Windsor Davies)

We have tried our usual suppliers of MIDI backing tracks without success.

(Note - this needs to be a proper backing track, in which the melody is either not present, or is on a separate channel/track which can be muted)

Thanks

Can't help you with a backing track, but I have it on 'The Inkspots: Greatist Hits'. This is an el-cheapo CD by AVM, # AVM 020.

Thanks, but Mrs Pavane needs backing tracks for her gigs, particularly the forthcoming VE day ones.

Have you searched the 'Net for midi files for karaoke? I did a quick search using following search terms on Google:

midi "whispering grass" karaoke

and found a few worth investigating. Maybe even just search for

"whispering grass" karaoke

I just tried that search and it came up with over 300 results. There was also a sponsor link on the right hand side for

Make your own Karaoke CDs
Amazing software removes voice
Remove vocals from any CD or MP3
www.luxuriousity.com

which I know nothing about but if it works it might solve your problem.

Helen,
Thanks, but I need a MIDI format file. Karaoke, MP3, CD and WAV are no good. And, no, you can't convert any of them to MIDI! I did search the net for MIDI files, and found 2, neither of which are any good for the purpose.

Thanks anyway.

Hi again,

I don't exactly know how you plan to use it so this is probably a dumb question but can you just get a midi file with a full arrangement and delete the melody staff?

Helen

Hi Helen.

a) Yes, but I can't find one

b) You can only delete the melody in one step if it has been coded in a separate MIDI channel or track. There are many MIDI files out there in which this is not done, and you would then have to delete notes one by one!

c) Mrs Pavane uses MIDI backing tracks for her gigs. The main reason for this is that it is easy to change the key and tempo. She is an alto, and most female songs need to be transposed downwards.

d) Licenced tracks often include a melody track which can be muted. By convention, this is found on either channel 4 or 16

In fact, to be strictly legal (in the UK, at least), for public performances you need to purchase Licenced backing tracks, because the appropriate fee has been paid for use.

Many performers use Karaoke tracks. Strangely enough, the fee has not been paid, and they are NOT licenced for this use. They are easily recognised (by the PRS 'police') by the fade-outs at the end.

Hi again,

I've never had the problem about separating channels because I load midi files into NoteWorthy Composer (free downloadable music notation software, but really cheap to buy) and it separates out the channels when you load the midi. You can transpose it in Noteworthy, change instruments, modify arrangements etc.

(The main thing to remember is to save it as a Midi file because it defaults to Noteworthy format in the save window.)

Helen, it will only separate out the channels if the notes ARE on different channels. Other software like Cubase and Cakewalk will do the same thing.

Normally, you need one channel for each instrument. With instruments like piano, organ or guitar, all the notes are usually on the SAME channel. So if the arrangement is for just one of these, it is not practicable to remove the melody.

We use a Roland MIDI file player for live performance. This lets you transpose the tune or mute channels 'on the fly'.

I actually write software which reads and edits MIDI files. See my program Find MIDI chords, which reads a MIDI file, analyses the notes, tells you which chords are being played, and which key it is in. (Chord symbols are not part of the MIDI format, and the Key Signature is optional.)
