Subject: Song suggestions for VE day From: pavane Date: 11 Apr 05 - 08:04 AM Mrs Pavane has been booked for a number of VE day gigs, and we are looking for further suggestions of suitable songs. The guidelines given are that 40's AND 50's songs are OK. We have already listed the usual songs like White CLiffs of Dover, various Army songs, and artistes such as Nat King Cole, Glenn Miller, Andrews Sisters, Flanagan and Allan. Now looking for anything else which may be useful, and for which we will be able to find backing tracks (This is the hard part!) All suggestions considered. |

Subject: RE: Song suggestions for VE day From: ElwynnMaxon Date: 11 Apr 05 - 04:06 PM "I'll Be Seeing You" has always been what I feel to be one of, if not the definitive WWII song. Elwynn |

Subject: RE: Song suggestions for VE day From: GUEST,Allen Date: 11 Apr 05 - 04:23 PM Most of Noel is good for a laugh. His ultimate has to be Bad Times Just Around the Corner. |

Subject: RE: Song suggestions for VE day From: breezy Date: 11 Apr 05 - 04:58 PM so I guess 'We are the Champions of the World' by Queen is a no no then |

Subject: RE: Song suggestions for VE day From: Snuffy Date: 11 Apr 05 - 07:28 PM MAry Garvey IIRC Anne Shelton had a big hit in the UK with "Lay Down Your Arms" in the late 50s or maybe even early 60s. It got a lot of play on 2-Way Family Favourites on Sunday lunchtimes |

Subject: RE: Song suggestions for VE day From: GUEST,cromdubh Date: 11 Apr 05 - 09:28 PM I believe It´s a long way to Tipperary was a favourite with troops from both sides. Eidleweise might be a thought for German side. Wooden Heart by Elvis. |

Subject: RE: Song suggestions for VE day From: iancarterb Date: 12 Apr 05 - 12:25 AM We'll Meet Again. Vera Lynn had a huge hit of it. |
|
Subject: RE: Song suggestions for VE day From: iancarterb Date: 12 Apr 05 - 12:30 AM also - Bless Em All. There are dozens of variants on it from various services and theaters of the war in Digitrad. I learned it from Brits, Australians and New Zealanders and my parents during and after the war. If there are WWII vets in the audience they will ALL know it. |

Subject: RE: Song suggestions for VE day From: Pauline L Date: 12 Apr 05 - 01:16 AM Mary Garvey, that's a great song. Here is one my mother used to sing (she was a WAAC): The WAACS and WAVES will win the war, parlez-vous (3x) So what in the hell are we fighting for? Hinkey dinkey parlez vous. It may not be beautiful but it's sentimental for me. |

Subject: RE: Song suggestions for VE day From: pavane Date: 12 Apr 05 - 03:37 AM Ah - 'Whale Meat again', culinary delicacy of the era. Bless 'em All (Well, not exactly BLESS, something more earthy) was a bawdy pre WWI soldiers song, but cleaned up and recorded during WW2. We already have these, and Tipperary. But keep then coming. We will look into 'Lay Down Your Arms'. I don't think Mrs Pavane would find Noel Coward songs suitable in style, though, good as they are. |
|
Subject: RE: Song suggestions for VE day From: pavane Date: 12 Apr 05 - 03:43 AM Note that we also have to be able to obtain backing tracks. Mrs Pavane sings very well unaccompanied (As in most of her tracks at motagator ), but that is not suitable for club gigs. That has ruled out quite a number of suitable songs. |

Subject: RE: Song suggestions for VE day From: GUEST,Obie Date: 12 Apr 05 - 05:01 AM "Lilly Marlene" was a hit for troops on both sides. Just goes to show that good music can overcome the rage of war! Obie |
