Dear Mr Happy

I'm afraid that you are a bit behind the times...see this thread....

http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=74639&messages=40
and this one...
http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=79849&messages=24

On 1st August Linda Sirman presented a petition to the Council which contained over 6,000 signatures and a letter fom the Prince of Wales!

For the past four months, the local papers have been publishing all sorts of letters from supporters - to such an extent that the Leaders of the Council have got jolly well fed up hearing about it! They are, by now, well aware of all the economic benefits, but have chosen not to allow that to tip their decision makingin the other direction. They haven't changed their mind yet, though they still might, I suppose. Linda did an amazing job rganising the petition and was very well supported by nearly 100 people on the day, who accompanied her to the Town Hall. The actual handing over was done by a young girl of (I think) nine years old, who has been attending the Festival since she was three and has been encouraged to learn to play the fiddle as a result. There were members of the Shellback Chorus there, various other performers, too numerous to mention...Many people travelled from the south coast to support her and the Festival.

All in all, it showed what a great and diverse set of people attend - there were old people, middle aged pople, young uns, rich uns, poor uns, fit people, disabled people, grey hair, purple hair - and a dog!

I gather it was quite an event - and they sang several shanties to the Councillor who accepted the petition.

Have the council given a reason for withdrawing funding?

With further info on this, all supporters would be in a better position to help.

Negotiation via raising council's, local pressure groups awareness of all the positive outcomes of the festivals & so on.

If people wanted the festival badly enough to buy tickets at a reasonable price, funding would not be an issue.

Ok, the Lancaster Council really want to take a look at what they are in effect STEALING from people. I have been envolved with Folk/Shanty music for a lot of years, but going to the Lancaster Festival really opened my eyes to what it is all about. 2 years ago was my first trip to Lancaster for the Festival, and along with me I took my 2 month old daughter. I thought it would get too much for her, but soon realised that the Festival is for all ages, from new-born onwards. The next year i took along my 1yr old daughter and my 2 month old son. My Daughter had more fun there than anything else, and now at 2yrs and 2 months old, she is playing music, dancing and singing. I have no doubt whatsoever that this is because of the direct influence of the Festival. (Also helped by the fact that her Grandad is so very influencial on her, Vive Grandad Paul Sirman (The Hobbit))
I can guarantee that this Festival cannot and will not die, as long as people like my daughter still hold the light of it inside their hearts!
SAVE THE FESTIVAL
Love to all
Vicky xx

Hi all
This is really a message from Linda Sirman:
'Please help to save the Lancaster Maritime Festival and Georgian Festival.
Lanaster City Council have, after 17 years, decided to withdraw the financing of the Maritime and Georgian festivals. We are having a petition to try to reverse this devastating decision.'
Anyone interested in having a petition form can pm me (Barb'ry) and I will pass on Linda's contact details. She told me that there are petitions being signed in support of the festivals all over the world.
Thanks for your help
Barb'ry
