Folk Clubs in Huddersfield

Hi there - Just wondering if there are any Huddersfieldites out there. My hubby and I have just moved back to the UK (from New Zealand) for a year and have done a house swap with some friends in Milnsbridge. Does anyone know where the good folk clubs are in the area? Are there any which are smoke free? I am a trad singer, bodhran player and occasional bad guitarist and my hubby is a bit of an all rounder but this year has been concentrating on four string banjo and jazz ukelele!!

We have a three month old baby - hence the need for smoke free venues.... he's already been to three folk festivals and numerous club nights at the Auckland folk club and sessions in the pubs over there..... seems to be particularly partial to the fiddle.

Anyhow, would be interested to hear of anything....

Try looking at Tykes News especially the Filo Folk section - Has a lot of info on the Yorks scene , though the last time I tried to contact some clubs Oop Theer the phone numbers were a bit iffy !

www.folkandroots.co.uk shows the General Ludd Folk Club, which meets on Fridays. They will have publications on display which should lead you to others. Hope this helps.

You definitely need to get to Holmfirth Festival (May 5th-8th). This festival is in its 27th year and is growing all the time. There is a huge range of things to go to - from Children's Hour, free Youth workshops, lots of traddy singing and music to watch and to join in. There are lots of new up and coming acts, singer songwriters and some very talented youngsters. There are local artists as well as big names. There are instrument and dance workshops, early morning and late night events. There is a French evening, a ceilidh with award winning Whapweasel, a clog competition, small intimate concerts and a full house at the Civic Hall or Picturedrome, pub bands, Sacred Harp singing, morris dancing of every style, street performers, local school showcase, craft fair, banjo workshop, church service, shops, cafes, pubs and a parade. Over the weekend you will find friendly faces who will direct you to the regular events in the area.

Hi Fi ...... sorry no pun intended ..... honest

A fellow Milnsbridge resident, there are 3 sessions locally. Firstly the General Ludd folk club held weekely at The Wheel in Golcar, sing-a-round session every Friday with occasional guests. Alternate Wednesday at the Shoulder Of Mutton, Lockwood, free and easy songs tunes and poems and Monthly, first Thursday of the month at the Station Tavern on the railway station in Huddersfield. I don't think any of these venues will accept children though and all are smoking venues. Further afiedl as leadfingers suggested look up Tykes news for venues throughout Yorkshire and also Filofolk there is a magazine which covers Manchester and environs who'e name escapes me at the moment and there's a very good club each Wednesday at the Cross Keys at Uppermill, frequent guests occasional singers nights. Inicdentally Saddleworth folk Festival held in July in Uppermill is one of the best little festivals you could wish to find.

Thanks for all this..... still, does anyone know of anything smoke free in the area..... or at least with a smoke free area or outside area. NZ went smoke free in all pubs just before our little one was born and it's been fantastic to be able to go to pubs without worrying. Looks increasingly like in the UK we're going to be restricted to w/e festivals. Are there any clubs which are not in pubs? Cheers F

The Ryburn club is not too far away, an excellent folk club and smoke free.

I haven't seen the newly refurbished Alma but I've heard excellent reports.

Come to think of it, there was/is a club in Holmfirth that was/is smoke free, again check on filofolk on the web for more details. All the pubs/clubs in Milnsbridge are smoke ridden and not suitable for your little one

There is one in Cleckheaton, just down the road on a Friday night, I believe it's smoke free.brain dead! can't remember the name.In Whitechapel road. Also in Cleckheaton the music room (folk music shop) Just out side Hudds at Armitage bridge, Eagle music. The staff there can give you info

I know it's not Huddersfield, but it's an easy drive of no more than 20 minutes or so, to the Wortley Arms Folk Club, Wortley Village, Wortley nr Sheffield (0114 288 2245). Just follow the A629.
Meets 3rd Saturday of the month; guests + floorspots. This Saturday - Flossie Mallavialle - not to be missed!
No smoke venue - but you'd have to find a baby-sitter.

The General Ludd at the Wheel is not technically smoke free, but if there are Kiddies present I'm sure that the regulars would be understanding.( The pub landlord insists that all minority groups are encouraged.) Raggy, I'm pretty sure kids are allowed in the upstairs room, but it may be wise to check by phone to make sure.
I certainly have no problem at all with kids being there, especially if they sing.

However an early one for your diary Fi is the 10 March (or thereabouts) 2006 is my annual fundraiser for the Runswick Bay Rescue Boat which will be held at Milnsbridge Socialist Club, turn left just over the canal past the Four Horse Shoes. However although we are Kiddie friendly I cannot guarantee a smoke free venue, however by then you may have sourced a reliable baby sitter

At Holmfirt Festival the concert/dance hall at the Civic is no smoking and family friendly. There is a full programme of family entertainment in the Market hall, including a family ceilidh and Pete White's suitcase circus, over the weekend with a craft carousel where youngsters can make masks or mobiles with an flowers and insects theme. - again a strictly no smoking venue.
