Best wishes for sucess! I wish I could be there! My ancestors left Rum (Gurdail & Kilmory)in the early 1800's and came to Cape Breton. Say hi to Aidan if he's still there writing poetry.

It does not seem to have a dedicated web site. There is some info on the site for The Small Isles, Westword newsletter April edition which is just out.
Or you could e-mail [e-mail].
Or phone for further info.
I only found out about as I was on the island the other week. I went to the community centre to see Angie Wright do an excellent solo spot.

Hey Willie-O how many Isles of Rum are there? You must get around a bit if you are hinknig of going to Cuba or Barbados. If only....
The Rum in question is part of the Small Isles off the west coast of Scotland. You get a ferry from Mallaig.

I was kidding, OK? I know where it is. But isn't it the privately owned one that no one was allowed to land on? and spelled Rhum?

The island was stripped of it's people in 1826 to make room for sheep. Almost all (about 400) came to Cape Breton. It eventually was sold to a rich Englishman who built a castle at Kinloch and used the island as a hunting retreat. It was called the forbidden isle because uninvited visitors were not well treated. It later became a game preserve and a nature study area under scotland's National Trust and visitors were still not welcome. In recent years that is changing and the welcome mat is out. I think that some parts of the island are still restricted due to wildlife studies.
The old Gaelic spelling was "Rum" but it was prounounced "Room". I think the Englishman put in the "h" so it wouldn't be called after my favourite beverage. In any case there is loads of history on that island and the real story is of the native people. We still survive in a part of Canada that is known as the most western of the Hebrides.
