To Guest, who seems to have so much anomosity towards Sidmouth Festival and who appears determined to portray any negativity possible about the Festival and aboout Lizzie in particular.
As you do not have the courage to identify yourself one can only assume from your comments that you are "one of the residents wo do not like the Festival".
What are you ashamed of? That you might be identified and have a horde of these detestable "folkies" descend upon your home?
The residents of 'Sidmoputh have a choice, as do the residents of anywhere else. If there is something happens in their area with which they do not agree they have the choice to either ignore it, to take part, or to move away.
A number of Sidmouth residents let their properties to folkies for the week, so paying for their own holidays.
Others, incomers, who only found out about the Festival after having moved into the town, could perhaps have done their homework about the area before making their purchase of a property.
If one does not like football one does not live near a football stadium. Similar applies to Political Party Conferences, of whatever flavour, disrupting town centres.
Don't complain, just get on and live tour life and allow the rest of us to enjoy ours!

You know if I called myself mushroom cap and signed off Duke of Earl it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference to the truth or accuracy of what I was saying.

If you choose to post in a forum which allows guest posting you have to accept this. If you put your opinions up for peeps to comment on they will. Some will agree, some will disagree, some will take the piss. I'm amazed you've never noticed that before.

Most folks round here know there is a festival in Sidmouth in August.
Some are going, some are staying away. Their choice.

I thought this thread was a bit of a joke, reading it from the top. If you didn't realise that I'd worry about your own sense of humour not mine.

I did just that and had a look at Longdogs, because like Lizzie I am a big SOH fan. I found Lizzie's name there among the list of members but no anonymous guests.

Curiously I also found none of these totally negative, unfriendly and detructive postings. Perhaps that's because there are no anonymous guests. I seem to remember Lizzie being slagged off on one of her earlier positive threads for being a fan of SOH but then again as you hide behind your anonimity your consistency is not reiewable so you might be a legitimate member of the sote for SOH fans, just hiding.

dave you should maybe have a look at what she posts elsewhere and you would understand how she creates such turmoil shes been banned from longdogs and shes almost finished the radio 2 board sidmouth is becoming a joke thanks to her a lot of local residents dont like the festival i think shes one of them trying to finish it off

Ah Robbie...as a newcomer you wouldn't know that the 'Olympics' have been to Sidmouth before! I can't remember which year it was, but one of the Olympics years there were 'Marine Olympics' in the sea in front of the Bedford. I'm not sure if that was what led to Marine Morris, which happened for several years, with lots of Morris Sides dancing in the sea. That in turn led to the Middle Bar Singers parading down and into the sea and singing, which, though Marine Morris has long gone, we still do.

Folk raves as well as a festival - maybe, but most morris sides would be too booked up in the summer for such spontaneity.

Folk raves to replace festivals would be to give in to people like the man who was serving me in the electrical shop near the Radway (the one with a display of festival photographs in the window) last year when the Sheffield giants went past. The fury and venom he displayed really took me aback - words such as 'idiots', 'holding up the traffic' [to me they seemed to be going faster than the usual traffic], and 'Why don't they stay in the fields where they belong?'

The article about The Sidmouth International Festival "closing" appears in a newsletter produced largely by Steve Heap so I guess he knows what he's talking about.

One interesting point which nobody else seems to have picked up on yet is the reference to the International Festival closing due to increasing regulation of outdoor public entertainment including insurance and licensing issues.

If they contributed largely to the demise of the International Festival then surely the individuals trying to put a Folk Week together this summer will face the same issues and problems?

As they don't even have the £60,000 public funding which Steve Heap enjoyed presumably they will face even greater problems meeting all the regulatory requirements with less funding to pay for everything?

One wonders whether the Olympics organisers will face the same problems?!!!

Has anybody thought about folk 'raves' where loads of people turn up without prior notice, and hold an event with morris sides, and mummers, and all other sorts of traditional stuff? If it's not centred on one building and is on common land, what can they do, who can they prosecute?
