BBC Radio 2 had a documentary about Rory Gallagher on Saturday night ( 16th April )

You can listen to it again for the next 5 days here

Just scroll down the page for the link

Rory Gallagher Documentary

Martin Carthy was interviewed for the program. I had not realised that he had played with Gallagher. Having a quick search on the net I found mention of the album ' Wheels within Wheels'which seems to be a collection of acoustic numbers. Has anyone heard this album and if so do they have any comments on it ?

Wow, hadn't known, thanks for the link. "Wheels within Wheels" is a collection of acoustics numbers, Rory was planing to do an all acoustic album, but he died before he could, so his brother put together all the recordings he could find. Sort of a tribute really.

I was listening to "Wheels" just last week. Great collection.

Cheers Rain Dog!
Only last week the good lady Pam and I revisited (once again) old vinyl from the darkest cupboard recesses - the first solo LP and also 'Deuce' (my fave!) among them. Now we've spent a happy hour listening to the radio prog online (which we'd not spotted!). Thanks matey!
He still sings for us . . .

A sad loss to us all. Duncan McFarlane

Really good documentary!!

Reminded me of the day I went to see him at Birmingham Town Hall, and the rest of the band were delayed by fog. So he played acoustic solo for an hour and then got his brother and lightsman on keys and drums and played another hour on electric - absolutely fantastic.

We were then informed to keep the ticket, and he came back a week or two later and did a full gig free of charge.

It taught me a lot as a performer on how to value your audience!!

A great bloke!!

Barry

Glad that people enjoyed the documentary. I will probably start off by getting a copy of the Wheels album

Thanks for that. Rory is one of the great unsung guitar gods, every bit as able and talented as Beck/Page/Clapton et al. A more holy trinity is Gatton/Buchanan/Gallagher.

(Sorry for any typos, I can't find my glasses.)

Peace, Mooh.

I was in the opening act for a blues festival, way down the bill, where Rory was at the top.

His band soundchecked first, he was on a delayed flight and just wanted to check everything so he arrived unannounced on stage with us during Key to the Highway, soundchecking about an hour before start time. He joined in and even made my lead lines sound better.

Afterwards, we had a lovely chat - such a humble man, no airs, genuinely keen on the music.

Then we went on as opening act, did Key to the Highway as the closer again and Rory walked on, grinning like a Cheshire Cat, to take the first solo, leaving me the second.

A truly cherished memory.

If you like the electric stuff, too, there's a box set "Let's Go To Work" which has all the four live albums on - I've just replaced my old vinyl.
