source

Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one night
Sailed off in a wooden shoe---
Sailed on a river of crystal light,
   Into a sea of dew.
"Where are you going, and what do you wish?"
The old moon asked the three.
"We have come to fish for the herring fish
   That live in this beautiful sea;
Nets of silver and gold have we!"
                     Said Wynken,
                     Blynken,
                     And Nod.

The old moon laughed and sang a song,
As they rocked in the wooden shoe,
And the wind that sped them all night long
   Ruffled the waves of dew.
The little stars were the herring fish
That lived in that beautiful sea---
"Now cast your nets wherever you wish---
   Never afeard are we";
So cried the stars to the fishermen three:
                     Wynken,
                     Blynken,
                     And Nod.

All night long their nets they threw
To the stars in the twinkling foam---
Then down from the skies came the wooden shoe,
   Bringing the fishermen home;
'T was all so pretty a sail it seemed
As if it could not be,
And some folks thought 't was a dream they 'd dreamed
   Of sailing that beautiful sea---
But I shall name you the fishermen three:
                     Wynken,
                     Blynken,
                     And Nod.

Wynken and Blynken are two little eyes,
And Nod is a little head,
And the wooden shoe that sailed the skies
   Is a wee one's trundle-bed.
So shut your eyes while mother sings
   Of wonderful sights that be,
And you shall see the beautiful things
As you rock in the misty sea,
Where the old shoe rocked the fishermen three:
                     Wynken,
                     Blynken,
                     And Nod.

And? So?

So what if they have a poem named after them.

If you're famous, poems get written about you.

There's no poem with my name in it, but that just means that there's never been anybody famous who had my name...

So you tell me that Winken', Blinken', and Nod' have a poem with their names in it. Okay, yeah. I remember some teacher teachin it in school. Or some of it anyway.

[There's no poem with my name in it, but that just means that there's never been anybody famous who had my name] YET...

And anyway that poem may be named AFTER them. Whoever wrote it could have heard about there adventures, taken their names, and put'em in that there poem. I hope they got some money from it. If not, they should sue that writer's you know what off.

But I don't really care about that poem.

Why? Why you ask??   Well, I'ma tell you why.

The reason I don't care about that poem or song or whatever the heck it is is because it has NOTHIN to do with the fact that a CRIME has been committed.

It's been TWO whole days and if Blinkin was alive, he'da showed up by now or called in or emailed somebody. But has he done that?

NO!

Not to mention that we got his running partners Winkin and Nod say they don't know where he is. They say that they haven't seen him an they haven't heard from him. Some best friends they are.

I think that's kinda strange. Don't you?

Yeah, I know THEY'RE strange, but come on, they been actin mighty suspicious about this whole thing, don't you think?

Has anyone seen or heard from Blinkin??!!

That's what I wanna know.

Well, I'm waitin.

I repeat. There's no poem with my name in it YET.

I'm just sayin...

Not that I want one.

You know I'm here 'cause I really wanna know what happened to Blinkin..

That's the ONLY reason why I'm hangin around here. 'Cause I want to help out in anyway I can.

But since folks are running around spouting off poems that don't have doodlely squat to do with the Blinkin we're talkin about 'cept the poem has his name and his buddies' names in it, that started me to wonderin.

Why isn't there a poem with MY name in it?

I mean, the name 'Azizi' has a musical ring to it..

"ah-ZEE-zee".

That's sounds real musical to me. Okay, you're right. I am kinda partial to it being that it's my name..

But I figure chances are that somebody sometime is gonna write a song or a poem about somebody named Azizi. So it might as well be about me-not me writing it you understand.

I would if I could but I can't so I won't.

But anyway, it feels better if somebody else does it for you-especially if it's nice and good. Write a poem I mean. That's what I'm talkin about.

Not that any of this is more important than findin out what happen to good ole Blinkin. That is why we're here, ain't it

But since we just sittin around here, what about it?

Can anybody write a poem with my name in it??

Come on-hit me with it!

[You notice that I didn't say "Sock it to me". HA! HA!
You won't catch me sayin none of that double tendra stuff that folks can take and run with the wrong way . My mother didn't raise no dummy].

Okay, I'm waitin.

If Blinkin were here maybe I coulda asked him to write me a poem.
But since he ain't, is anybody game?

A lobotomy wouldn't change his elemental character so drastically. And the change that does occur tends toward the mild and bland.

This just in.... family cousin Stinkin' has been reported missing. His brother Drinkin' has been interviewed by police but they say they can't make any sense of his testimony. Police scent dogs have been called in to follow the Stinkin' trail.

NEWSFLASH

It's all a case of mistaken identity! I have been informed by a very reliable source that it wasn't Blinkin' who expired! It was Wee Willie Winkie! Sorry, no further details are available at this time.

I'm in Atlanta doing an art show and a Klingon on a Harley Davidson pulled up to my booth this afternoon and said, "Listen, Bub, ya got it all wrong. It was Wee Willie Winkie what got offed, not Blinkin. And another thing, you look too damned much like Santa Claus! Get a shave!"

Honest! You don't think I could make that up, do ya?

SRS is the only one in this thread who has it right, and nobody else seems to notice. The name is Blynken. That's Blynken. B-L-Y-N-K-E-N. No "I", no apostrophe. It's BLYNKEN, dammit! Why can't anybody spell names right anymore? And why doesn't anybody care? Oh, the hell with it. Go and misspell your hearts out. One of these days, it'll catch up with you, when you least expect it. Then you'll see. Then you'll be sorry! And don't say I didn't warn you. Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!

Aloha,
Marc

I tried to post this information this morning but prevented from doing so by Certain Nameless Powers. At the risk of my very life, I'm trying again.

First, the dude's name WAS Blynken, when he was born in Holland. But when he moved to A Certain English-Speaking Country he changed it. This is reflected in court records easily available to anyone. No secret about it.

The mystery has been solved by using the science of numberology and the clews inherent in...well, see for yourself.

B B
L L
I I
N T
K Z
I E
N N

Four out of seven letters are EXACT matches. The remaining ones are NTKZIE, which provide the clew to the murderer -- or, to be exact, murderess.

When you put them together, they spell ZIT KEN, an OBVIOUS reference to and disparagement of the late "partner" with whom the notorious Barbie recently broke up and a VERY obvious attempt to place the blame for a gruesome and brutal crime on an innocent man. (Well, innocent of the crime -- Ken's now living on Castro Street with a guy named "Joe".)

But why, you ask, the name "Blitzen"? Well, Blitzen is Santa's "guard reindeer" and this fact is well known to Santa's Little Christmas Bimbo. After offing Blinkin (nee Blynken), she fed him to Blitzen, who ate him teeth and toenails.

The motive is obvious: Barbie had heard of Blinkin becauss of his stage name, "Wee Willie Winkie." She assumed that the name was ironic and that his "Willie Winkie" was MUCH more than wee. When she found that the name was actually a boast, well, roota-toot-toot, five times she shoot. Then chop-chop and a meal for Blitzen.

Blinkin's homies are pretty torn up over the whole thing. Nod said, "Sheeet, man! We wuz gonna give him a goin' away party, and here all that's left of him is some reindeer poop. What we gonna do, hang around the shitpile and party? No way, man!"

There once was a gal named Azizi,
Who was drunken and fat and lazizi....

Nah. Be nice.

A lovely young lass named Azizi
Lived in old Philadelphi-ie
The stories she told
Were better than gold
But there wasn't enough money in it to keep body and soul together.

Nah.

Well, I tried. Sorry.

It's amazing the lengths some people will go to rather than admit they don't know how to spell. Court records, indeed. Though I do admire the numerology. Don Brown would be proud.

No one has mentioned Eugene Field (though I've linked to him). My "evidence" regarding Wynken was based on a couple of his other poems (that it happens my Dad put to music). As poetry his words may be slightly saccharine, but they translate well into song.

Eugene Field? I grew up on Eugene Field. We would gather 'round and my mother would read poems like this to her children:

LITTLE BOY BLUE

The little toy dog is covered with dust,
But sturdy and staunch he stands;
The little toy soldier is red with rust,
And his musket moulds in his hands.
Time was when the little toy dog was new,
And the soldier was passing fair;
And that was the time when our Little Boy Blue
Kissed them and put them there.

"Now don't you go till I come," he said,
"And don't you make any noise!"
So, toddling off to his trundle bed,
He dreamt of the pretty toys;
And, as he was dreaming, an angel song
Awakened our Little Boy Blue-
Oh! the years are many, the years are long,
But the little toy friends are true!

Aye, faithful to Little Boy Blue they stand,
Each in the same old place,
Awaiting the touch of a little hand,
The smile of a little face;
And they wonder, as waiting the long years through
In the dust of that little chair,
What has become of our Little Boy Blue,
Since he kissed them and put them there.

Then we'd have another beer and sing "Bell Bottom Trousers."

Rapaire, thanks for your two attempts.

You helped inspire my own creation which I hereby name
"Hey Diddle Diddle-o" [the "o" is to distinquish this composition from that other "Hey Diddle Diddle" masterpiece. **BG**]:

Azizi is my name.
It is my claim to fame.
Singin "Hey Diddle diddle.
I ain't got no fiddle.
Singin Hey diddle diddle-o".

[For those who care about proper English-the 4th line can be changed to "I haven't any fiddle"-but IMO in doing so you'll wreck the rhyme's flow. Not that it really matters, but I'm just sayin...

Of course, many folks songs are open-ended. Subsequent verses of this song follow the same pattern and immediately flow from the preceding one.

So..in recognition of the theme of this thread and mindful of Mark Cohen's hyper-sensitivities on this subject, I will add this verse:

Blynken is his name.
It is his claim to fame.
Singin "Hey Diddle diddle.
He ain't got no fiddle.
Singin Hey diddle diddle-o."

****

and PS. to Rapaire:
It's Pittsburgh and not Philly..but I'll give you some props for composing rhymes using my name and some more props for remembering that I live in Pennsylvania and I try to make my living as a storyteller.

And then I step off into the sunset singin:

Rapaire is his name.
It is his claim to fame.
Singin "Hey Diddle diddle.
He ain't got no fiddle.
Singin Hey diddle diddle-o".

And since this is a music forum- my apologies, Rapaire if you actually do have a fiddle.

LOL!

There once was a lass named Azizi,
Who lived in Pittsburgh where winters are breezy.
Then she found folk,
And took on the yolk,
To find poetry ain't easy when it's freezy.

Ahh, back to Rapaire. I'm sorry too.

Fiddle? FIDDLE? I don't got no steenkin' fiddle! I don't got no steenkin' guitar, either. My wife has got a steenkin' guitar, but I don't. I don't fiddle around with no steenkin' strings! I play a REAL instrument, an' it ain't no steenkin' reeds, either!

I, as the cognescenti know, play one of these (except that mine's not that fancy, has vertical screw-type tuning, and was made in 1929). A true instrument for gentlefolk.

Hmmm,

Rapaire:
My ex-husband played trumpet and fugle horn.{jazz}.
I'll forgive you..

John, nice effort, but who is this Aziza?
That's a nice name, but it's not mine..

It's probably a good thing that this Aziza [who ever she is] doesn't need you to please her since that experience would make her quite sad.

Be that as it may, I'm pleased to end this commercial break and say-On with the show!
