                           Happy Birthday!

                        Will (Willard) McLean

                                 Born
                              4/24/1919

                            (d1/18/1990)

McLean was born near Chipley (Jackson County), a fourth-generation Floridian.
He wrote his first song at age 6, and chronicled the natural history and
folklore of Florida for more than sixty years and in 3,500 songs and stories.

The Florida Cabinet recognized him for "unmatched contributions and dedication
to Florida." Pete Seeger called him "...the greatest song writer alive today.
His songs will be sung as long as there is a Florida."

[thanx to Dougie Gauss and Margaret Longhill]

Sorry, but you've missed Willfest, the annual Will McLean Festival in Dade City.
check http://www.willmclean.com/ to catch it next March. Songwriting contest
for Florida songs. Many are very good but not one in a hundred touches any
basic political issues. And, believe me, in Florida there are plenty of them besides the environment.

And at the Florida Folk Festival (Stephen Foster State Park, Memorial Day weekend) a space is always left for Will McLean, exactly where he used to camp every year, right in the middle of prime camping area! (Like Elijah at the Seder?)
