Well is there?

Friends of ours are getting married on that date and it would be nice if we could come up with an appropriate tune for them.

I can't think of anything specifically for the 9th but how about the Swinton May Carol or the Obby Oss song?

There might be something for the 29th - Oak Aple ay / Great Wishford.

Maybe you could persuade them to postpone the big event?

Ah, a question for the Happy File. I have 7th, 8th & 10th and, of course, hundreds for 1st, but no 9th.

Still, there's a song called "The Pill" and the FDA approved The Pill (Enovid)= 5/9/1960. I think that's very appropriate for a wedding.

And there's John Brown born 5/9/1800; (hanged Dec 2, 1859). There's a song for him, too.

I've checked the DT for songs related to certain dates and listed them in My Song Calendar. Unfortunately, as JennieG noted with displeasure, ther is no song for the 9th of May.

Sorry
Wilfried

There is a tune called '29th May', it's used as a morris tune and is also called 'Oakapple Day'. It celebrates the day King Charles hid in an oak tree thus avoiding capture by the Parliamentarians.

It's one of the popular tunes for 'All things bright and beautiful'.

There is a tune called 'First of May' by Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, but hardly appropriate. It's a pretty little song about the lost innocence of childhood - a little self-important, but hey.. I liked it when I was 12 and had the LP. I think it was on ODESSA.. that red album of theirs.

Here are the Lyrics just because...

FIRST OF MAY
Barry Gibb (and most likely one or both of the other Brothers Gibb)

When I was small, and christmas trees were tall,
We used to love while others used to play.
Don't ask me why, but time has passed us by,
Some one else moved in from far away.

(chorus)
Now we are tall, and christmas trees are small,
And you don't ask the time of day.
But you and I, our love will never die,
But guess we'll cry come 1st of May.

The apple tree that grew for you and me,
I watched the apples falling one by one.
And I recall the moment of them all,
The day I kissed your cheek and you were mine.

(chorus...)

When I was small, and christmas trees were tall,
Do do do do do do do do do...
Don't ask me why, but time has passed us by,
Some one else moved in from far away.

Guess this is now a tune challenge.... any offers?

I've only ever written 2 tunes that I can actually remember (and have notation for) so I'm not really up for the task.

well, it would be very easy to say 'Eighth of May' instead of 'First of May' in the song I quoted above. it's a nice tune. With a minor re-write, it could be an appropriate song for such an event.

Let me take a stab at it:

When I was small, and christmas trees were tall,
We dreamed of love while others used to play.
Don't ask me why, as time has passed us by,
Our dream of love has brought us here today

Now we are tall, and christmas trees are small,
And soon we'll dance the night away
Because you and I, our love will never die,
And this we vow on this Eighth of May.

That's the best I can do right now.. I'll try and come up with more verses later.
