49. The Ruptured Cowboy (Maria)

Five texts from Michigan State and one from Indiana University
have been deposited in the folklore archives at the latter school, the
earliest of these dating from 1946,

The theme here is so identical to that of "The Gay Caballero"
that at first glance one tends to suspect more than a merely coinci-
dent relationship between the two, although this probably is not the
case. "The Gay Caballero" is much longer and more fully developed in
regard to the plot than is "The Ruptured Cowboy," as a single line of the
latter song corresponds in its narrative statement to at least one entire
verse of the former. To illustrate the matter more concretely, a variant
of "The Gay Caballero" is printed below, and is then followed with a
fairly complete text of "The Ruptured Cowboy":

[[removed "Gay Caballero" song]]

much more condensed and concise "Ruptured Cowboy," sung to the tune
"Rancho Grande," is nevertheless remarkably similar in plot:
I am a ruptured cowboy,
I have the gonorrhea—syph too.
I got it from Maria
Underneath the apple treah.

And now it's hard to peeah—shit too.
I'm going to have the operation.
The one they call the casteration. (2)

(2) Collected by Merrill and Virginia Walker at Michigan State in
1946. According to their informant, there are still other additional
lines which were not recalled at the time.

49 A. Clay McMullen sang this variant on December 6, 1963. He learned
it in a Phoenix, Arizona high school in 1959 or I960,

My name is Pancho Villa,
I got the gonorrhea.
I got it from Maria,
It hurts me when I peeah.

49 B. This fragment is interesting for the reason that it is not
set to the "Rancho Grande" tune, but has been reworked so as to parody
the popular song, "I Just Met A Girl Named MariaJ' from the movie, "West
Side Story," This undoubtedly is a very recent change since the wide-
spread familiarity of the latter melody has only come about in the past
four or five years. This text was collected from Jon Kwitny, formerly
of the University of Missouri, who indicated that he first heard it on
that campus about 1960-62,

Maria, I just met a girl named Maria.
She gave me gonorrhea,
But she gave it to me freeah, Maria.

College Student Oral Tradition

My name is Pancho Villa.
I got the gonorrhea.
I got from Maria,
She gave it to me free-a.
Ha-ha-ha-ha.

I took her to my castle,
And laid her for a peso.
I fucked her in the asshole,
And fucked her in the face-o.
Ha-ha-ha-ha.

This song is sung to the tune of the Mexican folksong, "Cielito Lindo"

"I am the ruptured cowboy!
"I got the gonorrhea!
"Aye, yah!

"I got it from Maria!
"She gave it to me free-ahh!
"It hurts me when I pee-ahh!
"Aye, yah, yah, yah!"

"aye, yah!" is that untranslatable Mexican expression of joy heard in the
background of Mexican folksongs.

Imagine yourself in a group of roving mariachis at a fiesta as you work on
your rendition of THE RUPTURED COWBOY. You'll win the respect and
admiration of
your associates and co-workers at the next office party.

I got it from Maria
She gave it to me free-a
And now I can not pea-a

I have the syph and the blueballs
I have clap on my two balls...

[spoken] And the rest I don't know. There is another couplet and it eludes me. The last line may have rhymed "ointment" and "disappointment". But I don't remember. It's to the tune of El Rancho Grande.

I heard it in 1976 from a fellow graduate student who'd learned it in Venice, Calif.

It consisted of only the first four lines of the Sigma Chi version above.

The name of the historical Pancho Villa (once prominent in U.S. newspapers) unfortunately rhymes with "gonorrhea," leading me to suspect that the name figured in the original text.

Why "ruptured cowboy"? Just bawdifying the first syllable of "rancho"?

Though "Alla en el rancho grande" was popularized in 1939 by both Bing Crosby and Gene Autry, it was published earlier in John and Alan Lomax's "American Ballads and Folk Songs" (1934) as a traditional border song. However, it had been copyrighted in 1927 by the music publisher Salvador Cabrera, with words and music credited to Silvano Ramos.

Oh, my! I heard this at a party with Navy aviators, in Japan in 1958. I can add a couple of lines (Tune: El Rancho Grande):

I am the ruptured cowboy,
I have the gonorrhea - ahh, ha, ha haa,
I got it from Maria,
She gave it to me free - ah,
It hurts me when I pee - eah, ha, ha haa,
I have my pills and my ointment,
I have my doctor's appointment.

I didn't think this existed. I first heard a boy singing this lyric at Boy Scout Camp in upstate New York, during WWII, when I was 12—14. It was a parody on a popular song of the time "El Rancho Grande." We all roared with laughter at hearing it, especially when the boy hollered "Syph, too!" Today for some reason, I thought of that song and took a chance and googled it, never expecting to find it because I thought that kid had made it up on the spot. But to my great surprise and delight, there it was!

John, I had a friend from Oklahoma who would often sing the verse you have above, minus the "Aye, yah, yah, yah" chorus. He never sang any other verses.

He also sang:
"Who in the hell in the God Damned nation
Shit all over Uncle Bud's plantation?
Uncle Bud and the whole damned crew,
Come here and help me saw this turd in two!"
