Hi all,

I am building a repertoire of Australian songs which have direct links to "celtic songs" preferably in Gaelic. The idea is to put the songs (source and variation) together in a set (medley).

My band "Tursacan" is working on the following: Taladh Chriosta (Hebrides)and The Wee one (Australia). Thou Bonnie Wood of Craigielea (Scotland) Waltzing Matilda (Australia). The Knickerbocker Line (English?)Lachlan Tigers (Australian) Willy Reilly (Irish - but have not found the music for this one) and Frank Gardiner (Australian)

We will record them on a CD.

Any suggestions, songs, links, background info much appreciated.

G'day Joe,

The Australian tune legacy is drawn from a very similar mix to that of Canada ... Irish, Scottish, English plus lots of 19th century dance music from the European peasant traditions - via the French Ballrooms.

What makes anything Australian is the way national character and preference is reflected in what is discarded and what is remembered. If you want to look a good site for Australian Fiddlers, try Graham's Folk Things here.

Graham is an instrument maker, now based in Canberra, and he organises the Australian Fiddle Orchestra at the (Australian) National Folk Festival each year. His site has a lot of recently collected material, courtesy of Carrawobbitty Publications / Pioneer Performer Series with background details on sources and GIF images of music pages. These are a bit low in resolution, to speed up downloading time, but good enough to play from.

The two best known tunebooks in current use in Australia would be Begged, Borrowed and Stolen, published by the Celtic Music Club of South Australia and recently reprinted (it should be available from Celtic Southern Cross at ) and Bush Dance (tunes), which I published for the Bush Music Club in 1984, 1987 and 1997. This is available from the Bush Music Club at: .

Begged, Borrowed and Stolen is, of course, strongly (exclusively?) Celtic and draws on homeland classics. Bush Dance (tunes) would have headed in the same direction except that I brought a lot of pressure to bear on David Johnson, the author, to include material from field collected sources.

I have to do an Australian gig. Need to have some "typical" tunes for the fiddle as they would be played in Australia.

Anything will do; eg jigs, waltzes, reels, etc.
