Hello everyone,

Below is a traditional(?) sorority song titled: 'Delta Gammas Do Not Drink'  (recording)

Do you sing this song?  If so when/where did you learn it?

I do not have any other recordings or analogs for this song.  Any help is appreciated.

Sincerely,

John Mehlberg

DELTA GAMMAS DO NOT DRINK  (recording)

Delta Gammas do not drink (do not drink)
Delta Gammas do not drink (do not drink)
We'll smoke, we'll chew,
We'll go to bed with you
But Delta Gammas do not drink --
Hell no we chug!

Notes:  This was recorded 14 April 2005 from any anonymous member of the Delta Gamma sorority.

What's the tune, John - "London Bridge is Falling Down," or a variation thereof? After listening, I guess the tune on the recording is "There Is a Tavern in the Town."

Melbourne University Women's Football Club has an old club song that is a variation on this. Scroll down: http://mugars.musa.net.au/song.html

Rooty toot toot! Rooty toot toot!

We are the girls of the Institute.

And we don't smoke, and we don't chew,

And we don't go with the boys who do.

*

We don't drink! We don't smoke!

Norfolk! Norfolk! Norfolk!

Just in case it passes uncommented, in standard British usage the two lines above. . .

We don't drink! We don't smoke!
Norfolk! Norfolk! Norfolk!

. . . do NOT rhyme. But they do make more sense!

Nigel

Folk- OED pronunciation fo'k.   o with macrom = o as in bore.
Smoke- "      "         smo- k. italicized o with macron, o as in soul.

Rhyme close enough- so what's to complain about? Unless Norfolk is given one of those quaint English pronunciations like Norf--k.
(sorry, Nigel, couldn't resist)

Q: As I suggested in my post, that is precisely the usual pronunciation, hence the line reads:

We don't drink; We don't smoke; Nor F**k!

That was the idea. They don't rhyme in American English either.

Two pronunciations accepted in Webster's Collegiate Dictionary.

GUEST, 01 Oct 05 - 09:40 PM,

Thanks for the link to Football Club. I have emailed them asking if they will sing their version.

Gratefully Yours,

I learned this song from my sister in the early 40's. She just sang the first four lines.

I always heard it like this:

"We don't smoke, and we don't chew
and we don't go with the boys who do!
Norfolk U! Norfolk U! Norfolk U!"

Solves your rhyming problem ...

I heard it was sung by the sorority sisters at Norfolk State University.

My suggestion:

We neither drink nor smoke,
Norfolk...

Would work best if both "nor"s were stressed. The above links do not work any more - what is the tune?

Fifty or so years ago I heard a slightly different version from my father. I think the differences from the wording cited above by Joe F suggest that my version is of earlier origin

Rooty toot toot! Rooty toot toot!

We are the girls from the Institute.

We don't smoke, and we don't chew,

And we don't hold with those who do.
