Subject: Lyr Add: 'I Want To Be A College Man' Trad. Song
From: John M.
Date: 27 Apr 05 - 05:28 PM

Hello everyone,

Below is a traditional song titled:  'I Want to a College Man'  (recording)

              1.  Do you sing this song?
              2.  If yes, when and where did you learn it?
              3.  Would you be willing to sing it for folklore purposes over the phone?

Any help is appreciated.

Sincerely,

John Mehlberg

I WANT TO BE A COLLEGE MAN  (recording)

I want be a college man
Mmmmm and a little bit more
I want to be a fraternity man
Mmmmm and a little bit more
I want to be a Sig Ep man
Who could ask for more
Then I'll have whats coming to me and
Mmmmm and a little bit
Mmmmm and a little bit
Mmmmm and a little bit more

I want to date a college girl
Mmmmm and a little bit more
I want to date a sorority girl
Mmmmm and a little bit more
I want to date a (DG, THETA, DZ, KAPPA, AZD, PHI MU) GIRL
Who could ask for more
Then I'll have what's coming to me and
Mmmmm and a little bit
Mmmmm and a little bit
Mmmmm and a Whole lot more

Notes:  According to this google search, this song is not common.   Although this song seems to be primarily a fraternity song, it was also sung by Chi Alpha Nu sorority members in 1945 (see here) and there is a Navy WAVE version (see here).

Here is a 1927 text of this song.
~

I'D LIKE TO BE A FRIEND OF YOURS

I'd like to be a friend of yours,
Um-m and a little bit more;
I'd like to be a pal of yours,
Um-m and a little bit more.
I'd like to be a little flower,
A-bloomin' round your door;
Then I'd have all that's comin' to me,
Um-m and a little bit,
Um-m and a little bit,
Um-m and a little bit more.

Note: This text is from pg 53 of Parodology (song #202) by E.O. Harbin (Cokesbury Press: Nashville, Tenn. 1927)

I WANNA BE A MISS H. P.

I wanna be a Miss H. P.
H"mmmmmmmm and a little bit more

I wanna be a WASP trainee,
H"mmmmmmmm and a little bit more

I wanna be a graduate, and then I'll ask no more
For I'll have all that's coming to me,
H'mmmmmmm and a little bit,
H'mmmmmmm and a little bit,

H'mmmmmmm and a little bit more!

MMM AND A LITTLE BIT MORE

I want a red canoe,
M-m-m and a little bit more,
I want a big full moon,
M-m-m and little bit more,
I want my very own girl,
And I'll not ask for more,
I'll have all that's comin' to me,
M-m-m and a little bit
M-m-m and a little bit
M-m-m and a little bit more.

I got a red canoe,
M-m-m and little bit more,
I got my big full moon,
M-m-m and little bit more,
I got my very own girl,
And I'll not ask for more,
I have all that's comin' to me,
M-m-m and little bit
M-m-m and little bit
M-m-m and little bit more.

Underneath the bamboo,
Underneath the bamboo tree,
Room enough for you, my darling
Room emough for one, two, three, four,
And when we marry, happy we'll be,
Underneath the bamboo, bamboo,
Underneath the bamboo tree.
