Heard about the universal remote that turns off most any TV, anywhere? Just think of it! Fits on your keychain!

I promise not to abuse it by annoying sports fans in sports bars, but I am VERY excited about the possibilities here: if only for conversations about addiction to and misuse of TV.

Anyone else think this is a fun idea and plan to get one?

Dani (ready for the ruckus)

this comes 40 years after we discovered that Canadian nickles would jam a USA jukebox..*grin*...about time!

So, now the bouncer at the door will be checking ID AND frisking you for little 'zappers'...oh, I can't WAIT till the first court case!

What is turned off with this gadget can be turned on again. If you find yourself in deep shit for turning off the tv, just push the button again. Then beat a hasty retreat as they stand transfixed by the boob tube. Don't turn them off again until you're almost out the door. :)

When I first heard about it, I remembered the time I waited 2 hours at a clinic for a mammogram. I was dressed in a little cotton shirt, sitting in a chilly, empty waiting room with no receptionist, and a TV tuned to inane day-time TV. Among others......

I would be first in line for a gizmo that would turn off the sound systems in shops and restaurants. I can cope with most of them but they drive Kendall mad and it would be nice to have some peace for a while.

This does sound like an interesting idea though - I could have fun with that!

How I would have liked to have one while waiting, waiting in line for a Southwest flight in Orlando. Why did management think we wanted to have the added stress of TV blather amidst the din already around us?

We couldn't hear half of the announcements. Good thing they say the same things all the time.

My pet peeves are when the TVs are in every waiting section at the airport when you're trying to relax or do a crossword puzzle.

Mine's on order.

It works beautifully.... but have only tried it on my own tv. I'll report back from the field.

I'm not the serenity fairy, but I would like to sprinkle a little wherever I go. The package says, "Side effects may include decreased anxiety, increased social skills, increased cognitive ability, increased sense of wellbeing." May it be so.

My real dream is that all the old people gathered wherever old people are gathered would have someone for company besides the tv. It makes me so sad to walk through a nursing home, hospital, hospice and hear room after room of game shows, 'talk' shows....

oh, BTW...the remote *I* have wanted for years is one that shuts down the electrical system of cars I see doing stupid things and won't let it re-start for an hour. I also want it to be a secret that such a thing exists and watch a new cult grow as reports filter in and superstitious idiots begin to report that God is punishing them for traffic offenses.

Man, I've had one of these (TV-B-Gone, not the Universal Remote) for months, and I still haven't tested it out where I intended to: On the TVs above the DVD racks at Target. I don't even buy DVDs at Target, but shitty Kelly Clarkson videos blaring in my face ruins my browsing experience, dammit.

That's it: I'm going there today... with my TV-B-Gone. I'll report back.

SharonD: you are right about the lost remotes. I have had two stereo tuners in the last 11 years, and they both came with remotes. By now we haven't the slightest idea where they are.

I believe they are in an alternate universe. If so, your hope for a remote which turns off this universe may be tenable.

Bill D: re "someone would have THEIR remote hidden away and would turn it back on again"

1. We need a remote that would reduce the volume of the target TV gradually, so people wouldn't notice when it goes off.

2. In a place like a busy airport lounge, nobody would turn the TV on again. There are two kinds of people there -- those who don't notice the TV at all and those who hate it.

There were interviews with the inventor of this last year on various National Public Radio programs. It is for real, simply set to cover the spectrum of the "on/off" buttons of televisions.

I suppose the savvy retailer who doesn't want their televisions turned off by such a device could set two TVs side-by-side at every location, one on and one off. The sneak with the TV-B-Gone would end up turning the other on when they turned the first one off.

I have about 6-7 remotes that I use regularly, including 2 which can be programmed to operate almost any common electronic device. I *think* I could note the make of a TV in a bar, sneak off in a corner and set it to that model, and then, if I was careful, (these can be hard to hide easily), do any of the TV functions, including gradually reducing the volume....the real problem is, all the owner would have to do is put a piece of tape over the infra-red eye on the TV and do HIS setting by hand.

CELL PHONE ZAPPERS

While commercially available in Europe (at 200 pounds a little pricey)- A similar sort of "BLASTER" can be made for less than 20 pounds - it "KILLS" all cell-phones (their cell runs to your zapper believing it to be the nearest relay tower) it works within a 5 to 30 meter range.

French are using it in their theatres Some use it in hospitols. Legality is being debated like bawdy ballads on the MC

CDs would probably make wonderful Targets where guns are legal.

I've had mine for 3 months now, and love it.
It works in airports, bus stations, bars, Radio Shack stores, the electronics departments of department stores, at home...
I don't use it if a lot of people are actually watching the TV, but if nobody's watching and the damn thing is just blaring away - ZAP!
Plus, it's pretty inconspicuous, and if you use it surreptitiously, no one knows it's you. Ha!

Can it turn off the receivers in the music section of the electronics store? That would be great. I feel like I need earplugs to walk past it.

What would also be good (but, I guess, an impossibility to invent) would be a zapper to stop people from talking when watching TV at home. These are people who see the television as wallpaper and must have it on in their houses all the time - they're not really watching at all. It gets me hopping mad when visiting people and, even more so, when visitors do it in my house, especially if it's a programme they have specifically asked to watch ! If I choose to watch a TV programme (which is increasingly rarely, these days), then I want to concentrate on it, and it alone. Sadly, I've seen this talking over the top of things filtering through into cinemas and even theatres. (Yes, I know, if you go back several centuries, that's how theatres always used to be, but it's not the convention now !) By the way, I would never *dream* of putting or keeping the TV on when visitors are in the house, unless they specifically say they would like to watch something.

Grumpy old woman's rant over for the day.....or, at least, for the time being.....

I recall that 20 or 30some years back, there was a little remote-like thingie that would "zap" a really loud car radio--when it was going down your street in the middle of the night. Then, most people were playing tapes & the thingie wouldn't work unless their radio tuner was engaged. It sure would be nice if I could have a zapper that zapped loud car stereos these days.   I suppose that Cpt. Kirk would simply have Lt. Uhura jam their frequencies, or Mr. Spock could conveniently have Scotty beam him in so he could do the Vulcan neck pinch & then set his phaser on "kill" & kill the car stereo.

It occurs to me that we are really talking about our privacy here. We see a lot in the media about privacy, but all they are talking about is the privacy of information, such as financial information or health records.

We, however, all seem to desire privacy for our own brains. We are objecting to people who impose their noise, their music, and their talk on our consciousness when we don't want them to.

Too bad most management is too stupid to figure this out.

Jeanie, I'm with you all the way.
I notice it seems to be more prevalent in Ireland/Britain than in the U.S.
I hate visiting relatives back home, and they leave the TV on the whole time.
It must be an advertiser's dream come true.
All advertising, all the time.
BTW the Zapper works on home TVs too. I use it on my own set.

Seamus:

I live in the UK and know a lot of people that just leave the TV on. It's not really seen as a problem over here as people have their set quite low and everyone just chatters as if it isn't on.

Advertisements aren't really a problem over here as we have so many BBC channels which are funded through our TV Licence (Tax) and so have no adverts on. :D

I used to pray for just such a device while slogging to work on the subway everyday with idiots all around me plugged into Walkmans that could be heard three cars away but only as a staticky throb. Sometimes I tried to wish them off - it never worked. Just a little button that could be hidden in my glove or pocket. I press it and jam their frequency until they take it off.

Has it occurred to others that we, as a culture, have brought back the 'nosegay to block out street smells'?   Only now, it is a sound blocker. All those headphones. Maybe even cellphones (mobiles) serve the function of blocking out unwanted sounds and strangers.

Has anyone recently rread 'Future Shock'? It seems to me that our society is well into it as described.

There is a group in our town that threaten to switch-off tele's in any pub they drink in. The landlord's reaction is to say "If you don't want television donk drink here".

My reaction is to take them at their word! - Mind you if it has a session it ain't got no tele. So no contest.

Anyway - all the landlord has to do is to tape over the reciever window until he wants to change channels.
