I did that with a cinder block once after three tries to get my name removed from a list. That must have got the message through because they stopped after that.

My dad died in 1997 and I still get a few offers to subscribe to magazines at the professional rate in his name. Don't know why those went to him (he was a librarian - but those subscriptions they ask more for - doctors and dentists get the low rate offers). Anyway, I've taken advantage of a couple of those. Most of the rest finally stopped.

If junk mailers send you a reply paid envelope, use it to ask them to delete your address from their list. Or, if you're feeling vindictive, fill it with another company's junk mail, which they will be paying to receive.

My mother left us just about six years ago.

As I was more or less in charge of the estate, I had her post office address changed to mine.

I am still getting junk mail for her. I got the message across to most of the people trying to sell stuff, but many of the charities she contributed to - and the Democratic party - Just Don't Get It.

I have 2 major pet hates - junk mail (paper) clogging up my mail box & folks who don't use bcc.

Not long before I got broadband I received a 2.9MB flyer that took about 30 mins to download!! I came from a festival organiser asking me & a bunch of other venue operators to publicise their event. So I wrote back politely asking the sender to please use bcc in future. I also mentioned that I was on the lists of 6 of the other organisers & none had mentioned the event, so maybe they also did not like getting 2.9Mb messages. The next email was 7KB & was sent bcc & I still did not advertise the event.

I have placed a mono-maniac acquaintance on my personal spam list due to long rambling emails that include lots of other emails advertising their cause. I printed one message out once & have never seen so many email addresses. Then when I started getting these messages at work from the acquaintance & one of their associates I reported them both to the firewall admin & got their addresses blocked.

I wish general spam was as easy to deal with.

My way of dealing with paper junk is to recycle brochures & return addressed mail plastered with an UNSOLICITED JUNK MAIL RETURN TO SENDER sticker.

I get very few items posted to me as I'm on the national 'don't send' list maintained by the Australian Direct Market Assn, however I do get stuff from Real Estate Agents (another other pet hate). Names of offending companies are placed on my mental blacklist of organisations I will never deal with.

It seems to be a lost cause to get people to use BCC instead of CC. Because the same ones who are unable to figure out that the piece they're forwarding is a spoof or is really old news are the same ones who can't remember how to do anything but hit "forward" and "Carbon copy." Don't get me wrong--some of these folks are my very good friends, but I try to give them as little opportunity as possible to send me that kind of stuff. Mostly I've set it up so my personal email from email-savvy folks comes to one address, and the email from folks who haven't figured it out goes to another. And that's the one I go to in its online form first and weed out the spam before I click on my desktop icon to load it into the resident email program. It is a system, and it does tend to work as I planned, but it would take too long to try to explain the logic behind it. Suffice to say that multiple addresses, as long as there aren't TOO many multiples, can be useful.

Email used to be enjoyable, and everything that arrived in my box was meant to be there and was sent by people I knew (or expected to hear from, as in discussion lists). I miss those days, because that was also when the humor posts were able to travel freely. Now I wince whenever I receive most of them.

One way of avoiding some spam is by chosing your email address carefully. If you have john345 as your address, you WILL get spammed, as will john1 to john344 and john346 upwards. Another way is to tell those nice friends that send you funnies NOT to send them out to everyone with the addresses in Cc, but to put them into Bcc. So when someone sends the funny on again, they're not sending your address with it....

I like to mix up the junk mail. If I get junk from the phone company, I send it some other company so they don't even get their own junk back.

have you noticed that they provide a smaller envelope for the return stuff? When they do that, I simply take the scissors and make it fit.

I send all the hotmail stuff I get into my Junk folder but it STILL appeares in my inbox next time. Grrrrrr

I'm still mystified as to why I keep getting mail from "the European Journal of Impotancy Research." It is a serious scientific journal too, not a ploy to sell rip off viagra. Obviously I just get a better class of junk in my inbox!

Junk mail realy browns me off whether it is electronic or snail mail.
I do get a bit of satisfaction with the snail mail though . Whenever I am sent a pre addresed envelope I send it back..... filled with other junk mail.
They pay the postage.
They spend time opening it and sorting it and disposing of it.
It keeps the mail men in a job.

If enough people return ALL the envelopes junk snail mail would end as it would not be cost effective for the senders.

Come on join the revolution SEND ALL JUNK MAIL BACK.

Open Mike, the function you're talking about learns from your decisions. Just keep it up, and in time it will get more accurate.

I get say 180 emails every day, of which almost half are spams. Over a few years, I have trained the program to recognize spam pretty well, in that if there's 180 total, probably 70 of them will end up in the TRASH subdirectory.   

I look over the retained (presumably good) emails in the INBOX, and if two or three are unrecognized spam I click the little dot on a spam and it is marked and removed to TRASH. Then I go to TRASH and start deleting unread messages, which will be almost all spam. If there's one that should have been recognized as good, I declare it as not spam, and transfer it back to INBOX. I don't get very many false positives for spam any more.

Yes, I have to spend a little time with the cleanup process every day, but it's quick work, and certainly not the pain in the neck that would result if I had to individually deal with each spam in the process of reading my voluminous mail.

my eudora mail program automatically sends some message to the junk
mail box...esp. if i have clicked on a message and lavelled it junk..
then if a similar one comes in it sends it there..problem is some
good messages get shunted there too. the Junk box is different than the delete or trash one. so i have to xcroll thru the junk to make sure the program made the proper choices..and sometimes find importatn and valuable messages diverted to there....sometimes ones that are sent to multiple recipients.

I don't follow links in email to download anything any more. I go to the web site by myself and look for the links and do it that way. It's too easy to get a spoofed email. I use Earthlink, and I've received spoofed email supposedly from them offering a modest monthly discount for being a valuable customer. I was to go to the web page and sign up with my account information--only it was all bogus. I found this by following my regular links to their account pages.

It was a genuine Hotmail Staff message - I'd probably have told them it was junk if I'd thought about it. Rather annoyed actually that I did it by accident!

Nothing. And it may be a spoofed address anyway, so it's virtually meaningless to try to write to any Internet Provider or service provider regarding mail that is supposedly from one of their customers.

Just went into one of my email accounts - the only one (fingers crossed) that gets spammed. Flagged all the new input as junk - and then thought 'Oh dear!' (or words to that effect). I've just told Hotmail that a message from their staff (about downloading Messenger 7 - I don't use or trust Messenger) is junk. I wonder what they'll do about it....
