Posted with no comment, except that I wonder which brand of loo roll they prefer.

CANBERRA (Reuters) - The queue for the toilet is about to get longer.

Fed up with the mess created by kitty litter and inspired by the cat "Mr Jinks" in the Hollywood film "Meet the Fockers", an Australian woman has invented a toilet training system for cats called the "Litter-Kwitter".

Mother-of-two Jo Lapidge is flushed with success after teaching her family's Burmese cat, Doogal, to use the loo.

"Doogal has fallen in, but he hasn't fallen in by accident, he has done it playing with the water," Lapidge told Reuters.

The Litter-Kwitter (http://litterkwitter.com.au/) is a three-step process, starting with a red toilet seat-shaped disc filled with cat litter and sitting on the floor next to the toilet, like a normal tray. Next the red disc is placed on the toilet so the cat can get used to jumping up on to the seat.

Then the red disc is replaced with an amber disc with a small hole. When the cat is accustomed to the water below, the amber disc is replaced with a green disc which has a larger hole.

The aim is that fastidious felines should eventually be able to use a normal toilet seat.

"Because the water covers the smell, it makes the burying or covering up instinct redundant ... To fully train Doogal it took about eight weeks," said Lapidge, adding that she hopes to start manufacturing the Litter-Kwitter soon.

But, unlike Mr Jinks, teaching cats to flush could be a little harder.

You just need the right BRAND of cat..I met a guy once who had an Ocelot, and I watched it use my toilet. He said the training was easy, as they commonly use streams in the wild to hide their scent.

But no, it refused to learn to flush.

various sytems to train cats to use the commode have been around for yonks. a MINIMUM of 40 years that I know of.

but this looks like a simpler system then I've ever seen before. I know a couple of people with toilet trained cats - one even DOES flush. (but she learned that on her own before being toilet trained - she likes to watch the water swirl)

I heard the inventor interviewed this morning & today I saw an article about her in the paper, now on Mudcat! Media saturation.

Is the moggy trained to tell her the toilet needs flushing? Imagine visitors who didn't know about the cat's toilet habits, wouldn't they get a surprise when they wanted to use the loo!!

There are 2 unbelievable ads below:

'Litter Maid Cat Box - world's only self cleaning cat tray automatically sifts litter clean'

'Discount Sale New and used Fresh Step Cat Litter Check out the deals now!'

I'm almost inclined to break my rule of never clicking on ads to check out the used litter, but I think I'd rather keep sniggering than risk disillusion.

Cats themselves make a good thing to wipe with. However, get them declawed first. One who's been there and done that.

Friend of mine and her room mate had one once that trained himself. Each accused the other of not flushing....discovered it had been Errol Flynn all along.

If its possible to train cats to use the toilet, maybe its possible for someone to train men to put the seat back down, after they use it!

always optimistic,

freda

No! Women should leave the seat UP after they've used it!

Years ago I lived in a house with two kittens. Once I was sat on the toilet when the kittens came in through the window and peed down the bath drain - then went out again.

I once had a rabbit who was house trained.

Some cats will train themselves. We had a siamese that did, but didn't flush, but I have seen a siamese use-and-flush on America's Funniest. They are MUCH brighter than moggies. Our moggie, sort-of learning from the siamese, used the bath drain on wet days.

Siamese don't consider themselves to be cats, but people. Inquisitive, destructive people.

decades ago when I was owned by a cat, she was made uncomfortable by me not cleaning out her tray promptly one day

So like Julie's cat, she peed in the bath drainhole. She saw me approaching & expecting to get what for, tried to run away, but wasn't finished. She didn't realise I was holding onto the door frame laughing almost hysterically. When she ran away & I'd recovered, I turned on the shower. And cleaned out her tray.
