Subject: Lyr Add: BEWARE OF THE MAN (WHO CALLS YOU BRO)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 20 Nov 11 - 02:08 PM

My transcription from the recording heard on Spotify:

BEWARE OF THE MAN (WHO CALLS YOU BRO)
Written by Doug Cox
As sung by Doug Cox & Sam Hurrie on "Hungry Ghosts" (2005)

A man's gotta walk with his head held high.
He's gotta walk and talk; he's gotta speak his mind.
There's one type of man you think you know,
But beware of the man who calls you Bro.
Beware of the man who calls you Bro.
Beware of the man who calls you Bro.

He's a snake-skin hipster; he will court your affection.
He's a smoke-screen master full of lies and deception.
On the stage in his eye he can shed a tear,
As long as it helps him with his career.
Now that's one type of man you think you know,
But beware of the man who calls you Bro.
Beware of the man who calls you Bro.
Beware of the man who calls you Bro.

The words of preachers are like punching clouds,
With hollow meaning and he sings it loud.
That's one kind of man that you think you know,
But beware of the man who calls you Bro.
Beware of the man who calls you Bro.
Beware of the man who calls you Bro.
Beware of the man who calls you Bro.
Beware of the man who calls you Bro.

The pawns who help him with the songs he sings
Are left with burned-out dreams and broken wings.
They fan the fire of his wealth and fame.
They swallow it whole by the very same flames.
Now that's one type of man you think you know,
But beware of the man who calls you Bro.
Beware of the man who calls you Bro.
Beware of the man who calls you Bro.
Beware of the man who calls you Bro. (REPEAT AND FADE)

[Also sung by Doug Cox (slide guitar), accompanied by Salil Bhatt (mohan veena) and Ramkumar Mishra (tabla) on "Slide to Freedom" (2007).]

Guest,

As they say my church, I'm more than willing to extend to you the right hand of fellowship.

As you see I even respond to some of your posts when I feel the spirit to do so. Some people never respond to Guest's post and that's their perogative.

But I draw the line at lending out my prized possessions to strangers with no names.

I know how to get in touch with the members. So I can judge by the acumulated history of their posts whether I want to trust them with my prized possessions.

But I can't do that with someone who just calls herself or himself "Guest".

If I did lend it to you, when I asked for it back you could say I lent it to some other person who signs in as "Guest".

And I would be so sad..not to mention mad.

Sorry, it's too confusing.

But if you chose a handle, and joined our community instead of just visited, I might reconsider.

Oh dear how disappointing. Didn't take you long to lose your sense of humor. I suspose everyone is entitled to their own prejudices.

And Guest,

Sorry.

In the rare occassions that I lend out my tiara, it's only to sistas I know.

And since I don't even know your name...well you know what they say-
God bless the child that got her own.

[That goes for 'his own' too, in the event that you are a he and want to strut down the runway wearing a tiara and dressed like you wanna be.

And to paraphase a once popular song in Pittsburgh
and elsewhere:

"We are a family.
I got all my sistas and my brothas
and me".

Yeah!!

Thanks, Sister. I wonder if there's a companion song (like Hey, Paul and Hey Paula, "Never trust a woman who calls you sis?

Nice photograph of you, Azizi. Somehow, I pictured you much warmer.
You look downright breakable. And I don't believe for a moment that you are poseable... :-)

I'd certainly "Beware of a man who calls me bro" if he knows that
I'm a female.

But a lot of times at Mudcat I've been mistaken for a male.
I put it down to an honest mistake caused since few people here seem to be familiar with the female KiSwahili personal name "Azizi". Then too nobody here has ever seen a photo of me-that is until I posted a link to my photo on another thread.

For those who missed it, HERE is another photo of me.

****

And just for the record, I agree with the spirit of Jerry's 06 May 05 - 12:09 PM post:

"Bro" is a friendly expression of love and appreciation in the black community. It has nothing to do with remembering mames. My brother-in-laws call me "bro" out of mutual enjoyment of each other. It's no different than me calling brucie "buddy."

-snip-

Except I'd call Brucie, and Jerry and other male Catters "brother" as opposed to calling them "buddy"...

"Beware of the man who calls you bro"

Just says be cautious; doesn't say don't trust.

Yes, I know. But no doubt the song is about someone who lays claim to a closeness that isn't really there.

Jerry Rasmussen: if they can't remember your name, perhaps you should be on the qui vive, if not actually distrustful.
-------
Similar words of wisdom:

Never trust a person who says "Trust me."

I never manage to relax when someone snaps "Relax!" at me.

I get the impression that the song was written by Geoff Muldaur. Some sites are spelling his name Muldar.

A friend of mine just asked if I've ever heard of this song. Never Trust a Man Who Calls You "Bro". Personally I've never come across it before, and a quick google search can't find it.

Hoping someone here can locate it for me. Thanks in advance.
