Subject: anybody know any radio djs in Missouri? From: Big Al Whittle Date: 04 May 05 - 08:14 AM In the last month or so I've had some delightful e-mail messages from a lady who lives in Missouri, whose 19 year old son is serving both our countries in the the forces in Iraq. (19 years old for heaven's sake!) Anyway it seems that he and his fellow soldiers have taken a liking to a song of mine that's on a Pentagon website. So (as one does) I sent them a cd and wrote them a letter. then in a rush of blood to the head, I said I'd see if I could get the song played on their local radio as a way to say hello ro all his friends presumably still back in Missouri. they were really pleased. You see here in England, its relatively easy to get music on local radio. You phone up the local BBC radio station with news of a local gig or a new cd, and they put you on the air in between "have you see this lost cat?" and the traffic and the weather report. Its a trade off. they get free music(of a sort) and you get free publicity for your gig or whatever. I'm not saying it would work for all kinds of music - if you were playing acid punk thrash heavy metal with a safety pin through your head and carrying a chain saw, singing about drinking human blood - you'd probably have to wait til after the weather report, and the man talking about breeding ferrets. Anyway I've sent half a dozen cds off to the stations in Missouri that i could see on the internet - more in hope than expectation. so many of your stations seem to carry syndicated shows from the west coast or wherever. There must be some local radio stations but where does one find out about them? Could anybody short-cut this if they know some of friendly soul, poised at his microphone, thinking what could I say after the "have you lost your cat feature?" and the report from the Missouri Jelly Making Club. All the best big Al Whittle |

Subject: RE: anybody know any radio djs in Missouri? From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 04 May 05 - 09:48 AM One of our Mudcatters has a radio program in Missouri: Jim Hickam. He's a great supporter of folk music, a Olympic Gold Medal Lonnie Donegan fan and a fine person. Jerry |
Subject: RE: anybody know any radio djs in Missouri? From: GUEST Date: 04 May 05 - 10:01 AM Thanks Deb Cowan for outing Paul Stamler. I've always wondered what Pablo Meshugi's real name was. |
Subject: RE: anybody know any radio djs in Missouri? From: GUEST Date: 04 May 05 - 10:12 AM Maybe you could get a list of colleges/universities in MO ...some of the larger universities have radio stations as part of their Radio/TV program ....get a list of their programming schedules ...if there are any folk programs, call/write/email the station and tell them what you are trying to do. Bet of luck with your endeavor. |
Subject: RE: anybody know any radio djs in Missouri? From: Big Al Whittle Date: 04 May 05 - 11:33 AM Many thanks to all of you for those suggestions. iwill follow them up and tell you how I get on. Big Al Whittle |
Subject: RE: anybody know any radio djs in Missouri? From: GUEST,Dale Date: 04 May 05 - 12:36 PM Actually, there are several possibilities at KDHX besides Paul. Follow the link given by DebC, and check around to see if your material might possibly fit with one of the others. |
Subject: RE: anybody know any radio djs in Missouri? From: DebC Date: 04 May 05 - 02:03 PM Hey Guest, I guess I forgot that Paul and Pablo are one and the same. He is always Paul to me and posts his playlists on Folk DJ as Paul Stamler. I hope I didn't ruin some St. Louis conspiracy here :-) Deb Cowan |
Subject: RE: anybody know any radio djs in Missouri? From: GUEST Date: 04 May 05 - 02:39 PM Paul/Pablo's show is almost exclusively traditional folk music with the occasional contemporary song done in a traditional style. He's probably the wrong DJ to send singer-songwriter material to. |
Subject: RE: anybody know any radio djs in Missouri? From: Big Al Whittle Date: 04 May 05 - 03:39 PM yeh he(Pablo) did me the courtesy of getting straight back to me and setting me right on that one. Never mind. Thanks once again for all your help. al |
Subject: RE: anybody know any radio djs in Missouri? From: Sandy Paton Date: 05 May 05 - 01:57 AM I think we all would do well to check out Paul's show on the Internet.. Great material presented by a very knowledgeable host. I think he offers the best traditional folk show on the air. Bar none! Sandy |
Subject: RE: anybody know any radio djs in Missouri? From: Big Jim from Jackson Date: 05 May 05 - 01:06 PM Two friends and I have a folk music program that broadcasts every Saturday evening from KRCU, a Public Radio station located in Cape Girardeau, Missouri on the banks of the Mississippi River. We stream on the net at www.krcu.org. You can access information on our show at www.yourfolkconnection.org. If you'll PM me, I'll supply you with my address; I guarantee you'll get radio play. I'm going to be gone from my computer for a couple of days (I'm going to Memphis, Tennessee, to see Seamus Kennedy at the Memphis In May festival!!!), but I'll respond as soon as I get back. Thanks, Jerry. Your check is in the mail. :-) |
Subject: RE: anybody know any radio djs in Missouri? From: Big Al Whittle Date: 05 May 05 - 01:49 PM I had some great news today - from Sherry the lady whose son is the soldier - he has a short period of leave, so it could be that he's home to hear your broadcast! The song he like so much is this website (under where it says musical tributes) and its called There is a Land Called America by me Big Al Whittle. However if you have difficulty in accessing or downloading the song of course I will send you a cd if you send me your snail mail address. http://www.americasupportsyou.mil/ I would have PM'd you this message, but I wasn't sure how to blue clicky on a pm page - as it is not on the bottom of the page. Actually I'll PM this message to you - see if that works! all the best al |

Subject: RE: anybody know any radio djs in Missouri? From: open mike Date: 05 May 05 - 03:09 PM you might try NPR and see what local staions carry their programming. here the npr station is broadcast from teh university and has a good folk show that has been on for nearly 30 years..and they stram on the web...so maybe if you find a folk web streaming show you will cover a larger audience than if you go local. |
Subject: RE: anybody know any radio djs in Missouri? From: Big Al Whittle Date: 05 May 05 - 03:50 PM once again thanks for all the suggestions |

Subject: RE: anybody know any radio djs in Missouri? From: Big Al Whittle Date: 06 May 05 - 04:37 AM Sherry just sent me this poem she wrote for her son A prayer to God from a soldier's mom Keep our children safe and sound Help them up if they hit the ground Hold them tight all thru the night Safe guard them thru the light Hear their prayer no matter how they sound Sheld them when the enemy is around . You gave them to us to protect and hold Now to you I let go. Let them know we love them so, no matter where they might have to go. Let them know our love goes with them Help them God to complete their mission. Let them know how much we miss them. Like your love a mother's love is alway's with them. nuff said |
Subject: RE: anybody know any radio djs in Missouri? From: Big Al Whittle Date: 05 Jul 05 - 05:02 AM just wanted to say what a fantastic chap you people have in BIG JIM. look what he did for these people with his radio programme, I quote from his pm:- I'm sure you'll be happy to know that both the parents and the soldier were able to hear the show. I've asked the station to make copies of it, and if they do I'll be sending it along to both you and the parents, as well as the soldier. As I read that last sentence it sounds like there is some doubt that the station will make the copy, but there isn't. Mostly it depends on when they get around to it. It is a little public station staffed partly by college students and volunteers (like me). I have gotten some very grateful emails from the parents I also got this e-mail from Sherry:- Did you get to hear the radio broadcast from James? I did and it was so nice of him to do that.I hope Lee got to hear it but, I havn't heard from him yet.I was so glad to hear your song. Lee's name and your song just seem to fit together THANKYOU JAMES! TOP MAN! |

Subject: RE: anybody know any radio djs in Missouri? From: MissouriMud Date: 06 Jul 05 - 09:59 AM Following DebC's note about KDHX - public radio station in St Louis MO - the station has lots of folk related shows at odd times which are listed on the web site. Many of the DJ's are part time and only have one short show a week each. Most welcome performance related guests. Keith Dudding does a great Bluegrass (with some Old Time) show called Down Yonder from 10 am - noon on Saturdays and is an excellent mando player to boot. |
Subject: RE: anybody know any radio djs in Missouri? From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 06 Jul 05 - 10:50 AM Paul Stamler is the techno-guru who co-produced my 1998 CD, The Older I Get, The Better I Was. He is the reason those older tapes sound so good. His show is the best around. Art Thieme |
