Perhaps the most interesting result was the election of Billy Leonard. He is a former member of the Orange Order, a former policeman, is now a Sinn Fein councillor. I saw him briefly on television and was struck by his ability to handle the halfwitted questions/jibes of the interviewer. And I wondered why this event isn't headline news.

Absolute codswollop, Keith. You are trying to sentimentalise your army's role. And your justice system, I might add.. Internationally, your army is seen as the collection of scum that it is, and always was, and our aim was to expedite your withdrawal.
They who win a guerilla war, are they who remain standing on their own turf afterwards, and in that instance we definitely win hands down.

You obviously do not remember Internment, the Diplock Courts.
Or the 'Supergrasses'

Nobody was safe from prosecution and imprisonment.

And don't try to tell me that McCartney's own family do not know the circumstances in which he was killed, because if the 'dogs on the street' know, they also do.
Did it ever occur to you to try and cut through the hype and the bullshit, to get at the real story... or do you not have that kind of inquiring and discerning mind?

I will remind you that McCartney killing notwithstanding, Sinn Féin still increased their vote, or are you suggesting that there was mass intimidation and vote-rigging on the part of Sinn Féin, as they pistol whipped everybody to the Polling Station?

Get real, Keith.
You seem like an intelligent man, but you spend too much time being graphically daft.

If the odd Brit was shot in the back, it wasn't because he was on his way out of the country.
The amount of bulldozers they drove through our houses, the amount of families that were needlessy persecuted.
Every last Brit and cop that was killed in the North of Ireland deserved every bullet they got, whether it be from the front, back, side, or above.

Our Volunteers done us proud, at the very least, Keith.

The British Army are and always have been the scum of the earth, with absolutely no redeeming qualities about them whatsoever.

That was and still is my experience, and no amount of 'in defence of the Army' will ever wipe away what those bastards did to me and my people.

Just for balance, a few words in defence of the Army.
It is a while since the engaged poorly armed tribesmen. Internationally their reputation is quite high.
It is true that in NI they were unable to achieve a military conclusion to the problem, but neither were the various paramilitaries.
In comparing them, remember the roles were very different.
The role of the army was to make the streets safe. They therefor had to be out on the steets, fully exposed. Who would deny the cold courage needed to do that.
PIRA had the arguably easier task of shooting them in the back from safe vantage points, or planting bombs where they pass, while themselves mingling with the civillian population.
As we have seen very recently with the McArtney murder, they were also fairly safe from prosecution because no witnesses would ever come forward, and they have become so skilled at destroying forensic evidence even in an emergency unplanned operation.
None of the above is intended to deny the courage of individual volunteers, some of whom did lose their lives on operations.

Out through Belfast Lough, the way they came in...

If you look at the map linked to in the very first post to this thread, and click to enlarge, you will see that it is not just the British Army that we pushed back towards the Lough.

Did anybody read the article linked to on the CAIN website by Tír Chonaill?
Large Timothy, and others.

Here we have the whole attitude of the Nazi Unionist Community in a nutshell:

Q: Is it not the democratic right of anyone in Northern Ireland to be a Nationalist and an anti-Partitionist?
Lord Brookeborough: Yes, absolutely his democratic right.

Q: And therefore, to expect completely equal treatment from the state?
LB: Well, it's very difficult to answer that, but surely nobody is going to put an enemy where he can destroy you?

Q: Even if he is going to use constitutional methods to do it?
LB: No. I wouldn't.
-------------------
You can legislate til you are blue in the face, folks.
That's where it's really at.

And as the worthy Tír Eoghain asks...

Any questions?

Guest,

re: free rein by your army.

In vast parts of the 6 counties they were given free rein and they were beaten, all those professionally trained marines, S.A.S. etc, etc were BEATEN by kids from the streets. LIVE WITH THAT. The diffreence this time is the nationalist had guns, so it was modern guns against modern guns and not modern guns against relics that were hidden in barns for years. The result was the great british army being beaten to a standstil, and that is what is sticking in your craw. If the kids from Belfast, Derry, Armagh, Newry had even half the equipment and the training that "your lads" had it would not even have been a contest. Ask any of your soldiers who served in Crossmaglen or the Falls, or the Markets, or the New Lodge or Toomebridge and numerous other places and if are truthful they will admit to being thrashed. The great british empire was built on guns against pikes, pitchforks and scythes, and look what happened when the "colonials" acquired their own guns. You were beaten out of everywhere you once ruled, beaten out and the same scenario will repeat in Ireland.

There is indeed a regrettably high level of abuse and insult in this thread and I hope I have not contributed to this. As regards 'semantics' however I throw up my hands and plead guilty as charged. A good understanding of semantics is necessary to even begin to understand what is going on. After all there about half a dozen ways to refer to the state. Or statelet. Or 'our wee pravince'.

Not as tangible, however.

Tim, it used to be 100/0

And it will change when the electorate get tired of local decisions being made in London, Unionist and Nationalist. The Unionists do not hold the balance of power as they did in Maggie's day, so they are doubly impotent, politically.
Non GFA signatories, and no sympathetic ear in London.

As belfast says, it wil change when Unionists become the minority.
Which is not quite the same thing as what you think.

When you live in the midst of it, and are observant enough, you don't miss a thing, Tim.

And I believe it was you began the insults and name-calling

Despite the insults and the semantics, no one has yet answered my question. Shoot the messenger, par for the course,.

It's still a 60/40 split in favor of unionism and it matters not which party the minority vote for at the present time, which is actually what I'm talking about: not 30 or 40 years in the future.

It won't change a thing until when, and if, nationalists become the majority.

btw, I don't think that living in the midst of it is necessarily the best location for a decent view of the bigger picture. Things can get blinkered and "parochal".

There are those who would argue that you can't have a United Ireland until a majority of Unionists agree to it. There is a problem here with terminology and mathematics. Someone who has agreed to a United Ireland has surely ceased to be a Unionist. In other words you will never have a majority of Unionists voting for a United Ireland. In fact, the logic seems to dictate that you can't even have one Unionist voting against the Union. Does that mean then even if there were only a couple of thousand Unionists they would have a veto? Half a dozen? One?

Exactly ard mhacha. As to the "No Surrender" politicians--they won't ever have to surrender. One day in the not too distant future, they will simply be voted out by a more pluralist society that simply won't go back to the days of bloodshed, and who start voting their true political interests, like jobs, housing, health care, education, transport and roads...

A small point of information. Rory O'Bradaigh's departure from SF was occasioned by the decision to take seats in the Dail. (The policy as regards Westminister is still abstentionist.) To many at the time time it seemed like an academic squabble as it seemed highly unlikely that SF could win seats in the 26 counties. The need for a change in the abstentionist position mas being discussed as early as the Hunger Strikes. It seems that some people knew very early where they were going.

Big Tim, no matter where he lives, has as much right as anyone to say what he thinks about the situation but I am surprised to see him misunderstand the significance of SF's results in the Westminster Election.

Tim says,"There will never be a united Ireland until the unionist people say that it's OK."

I, for one, don't accept this. This state was created in such a way that there was a sizable Unionist majority. Otherwise it was highly unstable. Including the other counties of Ulster would have made that majority too small. The state was still highly unstable and could only be held in existence by force of arms and gerrymandering. But now we are at that condition which the creators of the state knew to be untenable.

I have no idea exactly how the situation will resolve itself but I have no doubt that the result will be a United Ireland. And I have no doubt that many people in Britain will breathe a sigh of relief.

I knew it was you, Tim.... who else would prefix his own name with 'Guest', when it is already prefixed for him?

In that case the question about what O Bradaigh thinks is a superflous one.
You should ask the people who voted for Sinn Féin.

We are in very special circumstances, Tadhgín, have you not grasped that by now?
But on one hand you denounce Sinn Féin for not being more 'democratic', and on the other hand, you denounce them for being so.
'Ulster' has been saying 'No' since 1604, Timitheen.

And as you don't live here, so why the hell should it matter to you?

Tim , Todays local election results show Sinn Fein still riding high despite the sniping from all sides. As I said before, this election was the chance for the oppressed people in the nationalist areas to get the shinners out, why do they continue to vote for a Party which by your reckoning has them cowering in fear?, nobody frog-marched any of the nationalist voters to the Polling Booths.

Sinn Fein must be doing something right otherwise they wouldn`t be the strongest Nationalist Party now, and growing stronger.

Just having a wee bit of fun there as Lilibulero, Chalky!

I can't understand, perhaps you could explain it to me, what good SF getting people elected to Westminster does the cause of a united Ireland. Personally, I believe it's just SF putting a brave face on things. There will never be a united Ireland until the unionist people say that it's OK.

(Taking Westminster seats was one of the reasons O'Brady left SF and formed Republican SF. The Bobby Sands situation was a one-off, a special case, in very special circumstances).

What is absolutely spectacular about this election, bullen a-la, is that Sinn Féin is now the largest Pro Good Friday Agreement party in sick county politics.

Ask Ruairi O Bradaigh what he thought of Bobby Sands getting elected to the British Parliament

What's so great about Sinn Féin (Abú) people getting elected to the British parliament in London?

Wonder what Rory O'Brady thinks about it?

The tide is indeed turning. Well done to everyone who went out and voted, whoever you voted for.

To all of you whose names look like you're trying to clear your throats:

The Gaelic Song Lyrics

by
The Arrogant Worms

Through the ages, through war, pestilence and sleet, the Celtic culture has survived, it's songs and dances passed from father to son, from mother to daughter, from uncle to goat. And though few still speak Gaelic, the ancient language of the Celts, all hearts are still stirred by the beautiful tones of this mellifluous tongue.

Ah ma wee hach patew mae bo clee hach maneagh
Heow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow BARK meow
Saigh hough loo loo cheow dach hagh vreigh chouach mouheaugh
Douauh meah mae couchah moo ma meagh pach hooragh

And though other cultures tried to destroy them, driven no doubt by their jealousy of the Celts' fine fashion sense and edible cuisine, they did not surrender. Actually, they surrendered quite often, but they were never entirely wiped out, clinging to the corners of small islands, their voices raised in song, the clarion call of the pipes ringing out to the heavens.

(Undescribably beautiful penny-whistle solo)

Ah ma wee hach patew mae bo clee hach maneagh
Heow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow BARK meow
Saigh hough loo loo cheow dach hagh vreigh chouach mouheaugh
Douauh meah mae couchah moo ma meagh pach hooragh

Ah ma wee hach patew mae bo clee hach maneagh
Heow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow BARK meow
Saigh hough loo loo cheow dach hagh vreigh chouach mouheaugh
Douauh meah mae couchah moo ma meagh pach hooragh
Meach bo meah mea bloh meah hoo noo euach moo doo beah
