Subject: Origins: I NEED some help, quickly!
From: GUEST
Date: 09 May 05 - 06:47 PM

Please, my grandfather is soon to pass, and my grandmother has a list of songs she wants to play. The quest I'm on is to find out if there is a studio recording of ... Oh lord, it's hard to be humble by Mac Davis. I'm almost positive that the song was recorded with the crowd and that is the only version. If it is, does anyone know of any covers? Besides the Wild Oats n' Honey band. Thank you for your help!

Hi - I checked a number of Mac Davis recordings, and they all seem to be the same cut, the live version with the audience audible in the background. As far as I can tell, he must not have put a studio recording on any of his albums.

"Oh Lord, it's hard to be humble,
When you're perfect in every way.
I can't stand to look in the mirror,
I get better looking each day
To know me is to love me.
I must be one hell of a man
Oh Lord, it's hard to be humble
But I'm doin' the best that I can"

I believe you're right Joe. I've never heard of a studio version of the song and I've been into "novelty" songs for 25+ years.

It's a great song, though. I learned it from Charlie Pruitt, who worked with me for many years. Charlie would come into the office in the morning, grin at himself in the mirror, comb the two hairs on the top of his head, and sing that song.
Cracked me up every time, and it brings back memories of Charlie every time I hear that song. May Charlie's ornery old soul rest in peace. I miss him.

It's one of my favorites too Joe - and always a crowd pleaser. Fun to share that with peole and have a couple of them come up to you and say they love it but never heard it before.

-Joe, the essence of humility-

Here are the lyrics:

It's Hard to Be Humble
----------------------
recorded by Mac Davis
tabbed by Greg Vaughn cowpie@olga.net

Chorus

A D                                                       A7
Oh Lord it's hard to be humble when you're perfect in every way

                                                                   D
I can't wait to look in the mirror 'cause I get better lookin' each day

                           D7                  G
To know me is to love me I must be a hell of a man

                                       A7                   D
Oh Lord it's hard to be humble but I'm doing the best that I can

1:
D       G      D                                           A7
I used to have a girlfriend but I guess she just couldn't compete

                                                             D
With all of these love-starved women who keep clamoring at my feet

                                           D7                         G
Well, I prob'ly could find me another but I guess they're all in awe of me

                      D                A7                   D
Who cares I never get lonesome 'cause I treasure my own company

2:
I guess you could say I'm a loner a cowboy outlaw tough and proud
Oh I could have lots of friends if I wanna but then I wouldn't stand
         out in a crowd
Some folks say that I'm egotistical hell, I don't even know what that means
I guess it has something to do with the way that I fill out my skin-tight
         bluejeans

In 1981 a Dutch version by Peter Blankers was big in the Netherlands:

't Is

IT'S HARD TO BE HUMBLE
(Mac Davis)

[Spoken Intro]
Back a few months ago, I was headlinin' a great big nightclub
And they put me up a couple days early, I came in a couple days early
And they put me up in what they call the "Star Suite"
Now here I am, headlinin' in one of the biggest nightclubs
In the country and I wake up at eight o'clock in the morning
In this "Star Suite" all by myself

Crowd: Awwww

Mac: Yeah, that's what I said, "Awwwww."
But I did what I've always done, man, to cheer myself up
I picked up my guitar, I sat down and I wrote me a little song
Now this is how it feels to be alone at the top of the hill
Tryin' to figure out why

[Chorus]
Oh Lord, it's hard to be humble
When you're perfect in every way
I can't wait to look in the mirror
'Cause I get better lookin' each day
To know me is to love me
I must be a hell of a man
Oh Lord, it's hard to be humble
But I'm doin' the best that I can!

[Verse 1]
I used to have a girlfriend
But I guess she just couldn't compete
With all of these love-starved women
Who keep clamoring at my feet
Well I probably could find me another
But I guess they're all in awe of me
Who cares? I never get lonesome
'Cause I treasure my own company

[Chorus]
Ohh
Lord, it's hard to be humble
When you're perfect in every way
(Can't wait to look in the mirror)
I can't wait to look in the mirror
(Help me out now, come on)
I get better lookin' each day
(To know me is to what?)
To know me is to love me
(Must be a hell of a man)
I must be a hell of a man
(Oh Lord, it's hard)
Oh Lord, it's hard to be humble
(When you doin' what?)
We're doin' the best that we can

I guess you could say I'm a loner
A cowboy outlaw, tough and proud
Well, I could have lotsa friends if I wanted
But then I wouldn't stand out from the crowd
Some folks say that I'm "egotistical"
Hell, I don't even know what that means!
I guess it has something to do with the way
That I fill out my skin-tight blue jeans

[Chorus]
Ohh
(Come on, where's all the kickers in here?!)
Oh Lord, it's hard to be humble
(When you're perfect in every way)
When you're perfect in every way
(Can't wait to look in the mirror)
I can't wait to look in the mirror
(Cause I get better lookin')
I get better lookin' each day
(To know me is to what?)
To know me is to love me
(Must be a hell of a man)
I must be a hell of a man
(Oh Lord, it's hard)
Oh Lord, it's hard to be humble
(What are we doin'?)
We're doin' the best that we can
(One more time, what are we doin'?)
We're doing the best that we can!
Give yourselves a hand
Yee-haw
