Anyone help??
I'm after a good dance track on any CD of the wonderful "La Bastringue". Thirty Below in Quebec weren't too much help. Aly Bain/ Phil Cunningham version is pretty good, but not long enough!

It's on Tiger Moth's "Mothballs Plus" CD, but at 3'21" is this maybe still too short for you?

Committe Band have it in one of their dance sets on Dancemusic (WPCD001)

It's on Jean Carignan's "French Canadian, Irish and Scottish Fiddle Music," the first Jean Carignan CD that kicks out if you run his name on Amazon.com. It doesn't give a length but it must be the same one that's on his old LP (which I have) and I recall that as being in the three-minute range. Also, it's "Bastringue" with an R in there, if you've had difficulty looking it up on the Internet.

I seem to have loaned out my copy, so I'm not sure of the track length. It should be the whole song, though, on Mademoiselle, Voulez-Vous Danser?: Franco-American Music from the New England Borderlands from Smithsonian Folkways Recordings (SFW40116 1999).

Actually, now that I look more closely at the pdf of song translations, it says "Additional verses not found in this recording". Don't know how long they play, then. (Nice cd, though!)

What you want is Marian Rose's Step Lively 2: Canadian Dance Favourites. It's made for classroom or party use. Go here. 6x thru is 3:21, she says, so the other tracks mentioned above might be about the same.

I think "Step Lively 2"...is probably the Dogs!
and will do nicely.
Thanks to all other Mudcatters who once again did the Biz!

I'd thought that this was the same music as the LNB Polka but the Tiger Moth track doesn't sound like the tune I know as the LNB Polka. The new Tickled Pink CD (Polyhymnia Terpsichore) has a longish track called La Bastringue (I think that is the spelling) which does sound like the LNB Polka (well as Simon Care was the person who told me that this was the LNB Polka's real name).

So now I'm confused; are there two La Bastrigues (or similar) or is the LNB Polka a different tune and Simon Care was wrong?

T

BTW LNB stands for the 'Late Night Band'

Hi, the track on the new Pink album is "La Roulante", which we do understand to be the real name of LNB.

Quite right! My error. My mind has obviously gone walkabout recently (never was any good at remembering French words).

The best fun track if you can find it (it 's on Philo 2009, 1975, licensed from MCA Canada which I believe put out the original Canadian LP in 1974) is Madame Ed. Bolduc & Ovila Legare doing it as a duet. It kicks.

Mademoiselle, voulez-vous danser
La Bastringue, la Bastringue,
Mademoiselle, voulez-vous danser,
La Bastringe va commencer.

And so on. Ze true Fransh-Canadian "kitchen sweat" sound!

Sorry Compton, the track in question is on a CD called "The Legendary Down Home Recordings" which was taken from a TV series in UK many years ago, 1990 was the year of release
. It features, amongst others: Aly Bain, Buddy MacMaster, Jean Carignan and LBS. Probably still available from:
Lismore Recordings, 42 Kilmarnock Road, Glasgow, Scotland, G41 3NH.
Hope this is of assistance. Good luck.

Well, I'm only 7 years late to the party, but just tonight I came across this song on YouTube:

La Bastringue

I believe this is the version Bob Coltman had in mind. The female singer was known as La Bolduc, Mary Rose-Anna Travers, born in Gaspesie in 1894. She died in Montreal in 1941.

The male singer, according to comments in French, is probably Ovila Légaré, an actor, singer, and folklorist.

And here's the group Barrage in its far more modern rendition of La Bastringue.

From: OtherDave

Lyrics based on those posted at the YouTube video with La Bolduc, along with my translation. (Note: some of the French is informal or slangy, the way you'd say "oughta" or "wanna" in English. E.g., "toé" for "toi," "you")

ELLE:
Monsieur, Monsieur je voudrais danser
oh la bastringue et pis la bastringue!
Monsieur, Monsieur je voudrais danser
la bastringue dans votre café.

LUI:
Venez, venez, j'vas vous faire danser
la bastringue et pis la bastringue,
venez, venez j' vas vous faire danser
la queue d'votre robe vas r'voler.

ELLE:
Avec toé je veux pas danser,
Ah la bastringue, pis la bastringue!
avec toé je veux pas danser,
tu es bien trop excité.

LUI:

LUI:
Me voilà donc le cœur brisé,
la bastringue et pis la bastringue,
me voilà donc le cœur brisé
d'la peine que tu m'as donnée.

ELLE:
Viens dans mes bras mon cher André,
oh la bastringue, pis la bastringue!
viens dans mes bras mon cher André,
viens donc je vas t'embrasser.

LUI:
T'as donc un beau bec sucré,
la bastringue, la bastringue,
t'as donc un beau bec sucré.
Je suis prêt à r'commencer.

SHE:
Mister, mister, I'd like to dance
The bastringue, and then the bastringue
Mister, Mister, I want to dance
The bastrignue in your café.

HE:
C'mon, I'll dance with you
la bastringue et pis la bastringue,
C'mon, I'll dance with you
The hem of your dress is going to spin.

SHE:
I don't wanna dance with ya
la bastringue et pis la bastringue,
I don't wanna dance with ya
You're way too worked up.

HE:
So, tell me how come you're not embarrassed
la bastringue et pis la bastringue,
So how come you're not ashamed
To come here and insult me at a party

SHE:
Hey, you don't need to get upset
la bastringue et pis la bastringue,
You don't need to get upset
I just said that to mess with you.
(étriver, to tie cords together, make a bend in rope)

HE:
Well, here I am, broken-hearted
la bastringue et pis la bastringue
Look at me, all broken-hearted
from the trouble you've given me

SHE:
Come to my arms, dear André
la bastringue et pis la bastringue,
C'mere, sweet André
C'mon, I'm going to give you a kiss

HE:
You've got some sweet lips
la bastringue et pis la bastringue
You sure have sweet lips
And I'm ready to start again

I don't know much about the tune, but I recall from my hockey watching days in Montreal that whenever the Canadiens scored a goal, the organist would play a few bars of La Bastringue. My French Canadian sister-in-law told me it meant "go all the way" to the Quebecois hockey fans.

If you download one of the music editing programs (such as Audacity) and if you have a recording that you like, but is too short, it's a snap to slice a dew copies of your recording, and burn them as a single CD.
