As you can see from the following - we have to 'learn to live' with the fact that any thread about Martin Gibson will be automatically deleted by our anonymous volunteers as a matter now of routine.

Subject: RE: BS: This Thread Is Closed!
From: Joe Offer - PM
Date: 26 Jan 05 - 07:17 PM

Sorry, Peter. We routinely close or delete all threads that look like they're going to be an attack on an individual. Yours got deleted before it turned into another slugfest. There was no way it was going to turn out to be a constructive discussion.
As for any thread about gargoyle or Martin Gibson, we don't even think twice. We delete it.
Learn to live with it.
-Joe Offer-

If this was the case - why did a thread created with Martin Gibson's name in the title ever survive as long as it did before our volunteers had their way? Nothing like a consistent approach - and this IS nothing like a consistent approach.

No - you stated the first half of it, and not the second half, which does not make sense. the trouble is you did state that a contributor does not own their contribution, and then you said they do need to be asked.

It is NOT MY view that a contributor does not own their own contributions. It is the justification given by those of us who feel qualified to and for some reason wish to impose their personal judgement upon the contributions of their fellow posters. This is what I said.

As has been pointed out by our volunteers - the thread does not belong to the originator - but to the community.

A single contributor may have ownership of their post but even if they are the originator - they do not own the thread - but their wishes should be respected and their pemission sought before any changes are imposed by our volunteers.

Jenny - You may not expect to ask someone's permission to park next to them - but you may be a bit peeved if having parked it - the car-park attendent or traffic warden decided to drive off with your car and have it re-sprayed - to the colour of their choice?

Anyway, you want this to be all about the volunteers wanting to impose their will on members of the forum. That is not what has happened here. The originator of the thread was the one who did the asking. The volunteers only did what he wanted them to do, and rightly so in my opinion.

As I have pointed-out - our volunteers do only what they wish to as a matter now of routine and only take any notice of requests from posters - if what is being requested is what our volunteers wish to do.

What I want is for the shaping of our forum by all this imposed and arbitrary personal judgement of the contributions of fellow posters - to stop. Or if it is to continue that an open, fair and consistent approach be adopted - one that has a very clear objective.

I am not the one who is stating that a contributor does not own their contribution and does not need to be first asked before any change is imposed

No - you stated the first half of it, and not the second half, which does not make sense. the trouble is you did state that a contributor does not own their contribution, and then you said they do need to be asked. No matter what you say about politeness, it doesn't make sense. I wouldn't expect someone to ask my permission to park their car next to mine in a parking lot - even if I was the first one there.

Anyway, you want this to be all about the volunteers wanting to impose their will on members of the forum. That is not what has happened here. The originator of the thread was the one who did the asking. The volunteers only did what he wanted them to do, and rightly so in my opinion.

You may think that it deserved the opportunity to turn into a nice thread, but it didn't look very likely, and it has not been lost forever, only closed, which means it can be read, same as a thread that dropped off the bottom. If someone wants to pursue one of the better ideas that were in that thread, it would be better to start a fresh one, in my opinion, that will start off free of the nastiness that was pervading the old one.

No doubt you will slither around the issue and try to turn it back into an opportunity to have a go at the volunteers, and if that's what you are determined to do, then have at it. I still haven't seen one person here that agrees with you, so why don't you go and find something else to put your energies into. I doubt whether you will though. Anyway, I have a life, so I'm outta here!

"Asking the originator's permission implies ownership."

Jenny - An office chair or a bar stool may not be owned by you - and someone asking if they can sit in it - does not imply ownership. It is simply recognises a reality - and the fact that it is polite to ask first.

If I start a thread on our forum - with an original song - does it become Joe Offer's to re-title, move and change as he wishes and as a matter of routine? Where is this so written?

I am not the one who is stating that a contributor does not own their contribution and does not need to be first asked before any change is imposed. Perhaps you should take this up with those who do state this? But I do think that respect and credit is due from our volunteers (without any public judgement) to any contribution invited by Max?

If our volunteers are correct and the contribution does not belong to the contributor any longer - at no point does this contribution become the sole property of our volunteers. It may belong to the community and it may possibly belong to Max (if he wants this)?

Unless you follow our volunteer's skewed thinking - that responsiblity for everything they say and do is atomatically down to Max - to its logical conclusion? Which could lead folk to consider that the contents of Max's bank account (such as it is) also belongs to our trusted volunteers - to do with as they wish.

I don't think it sensible to think that the thread is owned by its originator - but their wishes should be respected and sought if a volunteer wishes to make a change to it. Threads are community owned and the community can and will pass natural judgement as to when it is no longer of interest. Because they are community efforts - folk should not ask for threads to be closed or deleted and our volunteers should not impose their personal judgement upon them as a matter of routine.

Individual posts are probably more easily thought of as being owned by their originator - and if someone wishes their own post to be deleted or changed - the poster is most likely entitled to ask for this....

I said "Asking the originator's permission implies ownership."

I think you know perfectly well that I meant ownership by the thread originator.

So since you have chosen to change the subject, I will ask you in another way - if, as you say, the thread belongs to the community, why do you think the volunteers should ask the thread originator's permission, since you say he doesn't own the thread any more than anyone else does?

Our volunteers asking the poster's permission before they change anything that have been freely invited by the site's owner to contribute - is simply showing respect to the spirit in which the contribution was made.

Our volunteers imposing their personal judgement upon these contributions and changing them in any way - without the originator's knowledge or consent - probably does - (incorectly) assume ownership.

I was pointing what the 'official' wiew was said to be when our volunteers wish to impose their judgement upon posters - without the originator's knowledge or permission .

My perfectly consistent view is to respect all invited contributions and let the community decide whether to open, respond or ignore posts and for no threads to be subject to routine imposed censorship.

The positive contribution posted in a effort to improve that thread - can be found here.

Justa Picker's sound clip
There is a sound clip of some fine guitar picking by Justa Picker in an otherwise pejorative BS thread down below (Bobert/MG slugfest). I would like to see and hear more of this type of music posted up here in the Music Section.

Okay, then why are you always going on about getting the permission of the thread originator? Now you're saying the thread belongs to the community. You're contradicting yourself Roger. At least be consistent.

This thread has also been requested to be closed by its originator - so had the 'Objections to Joe Offer' thread.

As has been pointed out by our volunteers - the thread does not belong to the originator - but to the community.

The originator's wishes should certainly be respected but so should the community's. Closing the thread only prevents others from posting and improving the thread.

And in this case it also prevents other posters from seeing the link to the music posted in the thread - in just such an effort to improve it.

Roger, if you had looked at the thread properly, you wouldn't have to ask. It was closed at the request of Bobert, who started the thread, because it had turned nasty.

In his own words:

NOTICE:

Because this thread has turned into a potty mouth forum for Martin, I, as the one who started it, have asked Max to close it....

Is that clear enough for you Roger? Sheesh!
