I had the privilege of stumbling on Odetta for an hours worth of fantastic television. If your ETV station can get your hands on this 8 part series "Blues Divas" it should. Morgan Freeman hosts it, it was taped last year in Clarksdale, Miss. You can check it out on the site of Mississippi Public Broadcasting, but I found this link which had a better description.

If you are an unfortunate like me who had only heard her on an occasional recording and didn't get what the big deal was, sheesh, you gotta hear this lady in person someday, or at least see this wonderful piece of video.

Saw her recently at the Chocolate Church in Bath. Still an amazing presence and booming voice. WOW!

My 6th grade English teacher introduced me to Odetta's singing.

Odetta was the first African American 'folk singer' I ever heard and she was the first Black woman I had ever seen [on an album cover] with a short cropped 'afro'.

Many years later, I still LOVE Odetta's voice, and her musical repertoire, and her presence.

Page down HERE to show #185 for links to see AND hear about an hour's worth of Odetta. Save it to your disk in either form and keep her close!
