I have just received the word that Peggy Seeger is doing a 70th birthday concert in London's Queen Elizabet Hall on May 29. I almost feel like making the trip just to go to that gig but, although I'm a little younger than Peggy, I don't have her incredible energy. I hope she has a happy birthday: she deserves it.

You might think again when you hear the rest of the line up, Pete Seeger, Mike Seeger, Waterson Carthy and suprise guests.
I wish I could go.

If truth were told I'd be tempted to go even if it were only to see Mike Seeger.

Heard Peggy at a small gig in Athlone last year. It's not just the energy - the passion still flares too.

Offhand, as well as singing, she played guitar, 5-string banjo, keyboard, concertina - and autoharp!

Regards

It's a pity the concert's on May 29th - many of the British old time scene will be at the Sacrewell Farm Old Time camp near Peterborough.

There was the deafening roar of pins dropping as Pete Seeger rose to sing Where Have All The Flowers Gone. When he finished there was just a deafening roar, almost as loud as the one after the three siblings performed together, interspersed with so much childhood reminiscence. And the ones after Peggy's duets with Eliza Carthy, with brother Mike, with Billy Bragg and with Martin Carthy. And the trio with her sons Calum and Neill who also accompanied her songs with partner Irene Scott. Norma Waterson was there, to add to the choruses as well as to perform a short spot with Martin and Eliza. And Peggy's youngest child Kitty joined for the choruses too until, towards the end, all the grandchildren were up on stage too, saluting this amazing musician and activist as she approaches 70. Peggy marked important milestones in her life with poetry and song: the poem she wrote upon Ewan MacColl's death in 1989 was followed by the song he wrote for her, First Time Ever after their marriage, and then what she has written for Irene who has changed her life yet again. It was a conversation with the audience (sometimes literally) spanning the years. Even Gonna Be An Engineer was in there. Being the QEH on London's South Bank, of course the sound and lighting were terrible. But it was the experience of spending a couple of hours sharing the life and experience of this remarkable woman that we took away with us.

I'll have to record this MH show as I'll be taking Herself to see Sonny Black & the Dukes at Jagz that night (and eating but not singing!).

Scroll down slightly for "Coming up on the show"

This home page also links to "Listen Live" & "Listen again". The latter being where the whole show can usually be found for one week following its first airing

Many thanks Peggy for coming to Heald Green Village Hall yesterday and conducting a "song masterclass" from 2.00 until 9.00 pm.

It was well appreciated.
