Subject: Lyr Req: I'm in Love With Atilla the Hun Lyrics
From: GUEST,Celticcowgirl

Carol Burnet did a skit (about a 100 years ago)on her tv show and sang a song "I'm in love wiuth Atilla the Hun". Does anyone know the complete song? It was pretty funny.

I found several quotes that look more or less like this:

I'm in love, I'm in love with Attila the Hun,
Attila the Hun, Attila the Hun.
So let's pillage a village and kill everyone.
I'm in love with Attila the Hun, Hun, Hun.

But I was unable to find any site that had more than the one verse.

According to TV Acres, IN LOVE WITH ATILLA THE HUN first appeared on episode 118 of The Dick Van Dyke Show, and later on episode 29 of "That Girl." Both programs were written by Bill Persky and Sam Denoff.

Spelling is a concern:
"Attila the Hun" – 138,000 hits on Google
"Atilla the Hun" – 21,100
"Atila the Hun" – 16,200
"Attilla the Hun" – 4,330

I heard it first on "The Dick Van Dyke Show", and then later on "That Girl", just as Jim Dixon noted. I assumed (without any actual knowledge) that it was an old vaudeville song.

Working strictly from the memory of hearing it on those two shows, I have it as

I'm in love, I'm in love
with Attila the Hun,
Attila the Hun, Attila the Hun
Though a village, he'll pillage,
and kill everyone,
I still love Attila the Hun!

There's a very poor recording of the song on this page (click). The tune is very familiar, 3/4 time, but I can't place it - can somebody put me out of my misery and name that tune?
The closest thing I can recall is the Tom Paxton song: "In ten years we're going to have one million lawyers..." - but I think the source tune is older than that.

A few ages ago, we sang "He lay in his hammock and smoked a seegar.." to that tune. It's been used in square dance circles for a a square called "Waltz Promenade"

I believe that GUEST.Annie's rendition is closest to the lyrics I recall. Also, I think that a second song shows up in both shows, this is also from memory:

"She was the sweetest girl,
The sweetest girl I've ever known,
But why, oh, why, did she stand in front of,
The Guns of Navarone?"

Attila the Hun

I know this thread is five years old, but, to give it some closure, here are the rest of the lyrics, in the event that anyone is still looking for them--

ATTILA THE HUN

I'm in love, I'm in love with Attila the Hun
Attila the Hun, Attila the Hun
Though he pillages villages, it's all in fun
I still love my Attila the Hun

I'm in love I'm in love with Attila the Hun
Attila the Hun is my honey bun
Though he ravages savages, it's all in good fun
I still love Attila the Hun

I'm in love I'm in love with Attila the Hun
Attila the Hun is second to none
Though he sneaks up on sheep, he's my number one
I still love Attila the Hun.

"Sneaking up on sheep" is SO anticlimactic, after all that stuff about vilages and saveages!

I remember singing this in college --- (a Women's Catholic College)

But I remember ending the last verse

"He's a very wonderful guy"

My Mom sang it to me this way sometime in the 1970s or 1980s:

I'm in love, I'm in love,
With Atilla the Hun,
Atilla the Hun.

We'll burn up a village
And pillage everyone,
I'm in love with Atilla the Hun.

When she sang it, the second "a" in Atilla's name elongated, as was the word "everyone".

She said she had heard it as a little girl, if I recall correctly. Had there been more words to the song she had heard I believe she would have remembered them.

I remember the song from the tv episodes as:

"I'm in love, I'm in love
with Attila the Hun, Attila the Hun.
He'll Pillage a village
and kill everyone,
but I still love Attila the Hun"

The bit about sneaking up on sheep, which seems so anticlimactic after massacring entire villages, may be a discrete reference to bestiality. Thus the singer might be complaining not only is Attila really evil to strangers, but he is also unfaithful to her, and with animals!

Of course, in an objective sense killing even a single innocent child in a village is infinitely worse than being unfaithful with even a trillion human or animal partners, but subjectively the singer may feel more hurt by Attila's sexual straying and thus say that she sloves him even after that.

Just an idea.

I believe Greg Morris (Mission Impossible) and Dick Van Dyke sang it on the Dick Van Dyke show as they were trying to find out about "bupkis" or "nothing" and how the song was stolen.

In the '70's I remember hear a version:

I'm in love, I'm in love
With Matilla the Hun, Matilla the Hun
I'm in love with a gal named Matilla the Hun,
and Matilla's in love with me.

She stands on the mountain and blocks out the sun,
Matilla the Hun, Matilla the Hun,
I'm in love with a gal named Matilla the Hun,
and Matilla's in love with me!

I wish I could remember the other verses.

I remember it also from The Dick Van Dyke show. It was the episode where Greg Morris later on Mission Impossible showed up at the end. Van Dyke was reminiscing with his songwriting buddy when he was in the army. They only sang one verse. Most of the episodes i don't even recall. That verse made that one stick in my head.

greg morris portrays a drummer from the US Army days of Dick Van Dyke (rob petrie)...his name: STICKS MANDALAY

of note, greg morris also portrays MR Peters in the episode where Rob thinks he took the wrong baby home from the hospital.

I'm in love I'm in love with Attila the hun
atilla the hun, atilla the hun
though he'll pillage a village
and kill everyone

I still love atilla the hun.

We used to sing this at Mt. Holyoke in one of the close harmony groups.

I'm in love, I'm in love
With Attila the Hun -
Attila the Hun,
Attila the Hun!
We will pillage
the village
and rrrrrrrape everyone!
I'm in love with Attila the Hun!

He's a hunk of a hun
he's the one that I hunger for
He is the one
who makes hun life fun!
He's the one I'll take home
when we vandalize Rome
I'm in love with Attila the Hun!

Everyone!

I'm in love, I'm in love
With Attila the Hun
Attila the Hun,
Attila the Hun!
We will pillage
the village
and rrrrrrrape everyone!
I'm in love with Attila the Hun!

He's Fun!

The song "Attila the Hun" was also sung once on "Good Morning World", another Persky-Denoff sitcom, this one about two disk jockeys (Joby Baker and Ronnie Schell) and their stuffy, humorless station owner (Billy de Wolfe).

I remember watching a stage play in elementary school in the late 80s that involved Sci-Fi time travel that had this song in it. It turns out it stole a bunch of songs and things from various things - not only did it have the Attila the Hun song but also stole the Time Warp song from Rocky Horror and several jokes and situations directly lifted from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. I've poked around looking for it but I figure at this point it was some homebrew play by someone local at the time.
