(|:Am Em B7 Em:|)

Am         Em
Dve gitari za stenoyu                Two guitars sound through the wall
B7       Em
Zhalabna zanyli                        Moaning and weeping
Am6          Em
Sertse pamyatny napyev                 It's a childhood tune I know
B7       Em
Mily eta tyli.                         Keeping me from sleeping

Am       Em
Ekh raz yeshchoras                Just once, once again
B7             Em
Yeshcho mnoga mnogaras                Play it once, once again
Am6            Em
Ekh ekh raz da yeshchoras
B      F#7 B7 Em
Yeshchomnoga mnogaras.

Pagavari-zhe ty so mnoyu
Padruga semistrunnaya
Fsya dusha palna taboyu
A noch takaya lunnaya.

Gdye balit, chto balit
Galava s pakhmelia
Sevodnya pyom, zaftra pyom
Tseluyu nedyelyu.

U menya byla zhena
Ana mnye izmenila
Izmenila tol'ka raz
A patom reshila.

Na garye stayit al'kha
Par garoyu vyshenya
Paren' lyubil tsiganochku
Ana zamush vyshla.

Veter polye vassilki (ba)
Dalnaya daroga
Sertse noyet at taski
Na dushe trevoga.

This song one that everyone will recognize when they hear it, though they might not know the name. It is not sung much, but every "Pops" orchestra that ever played a concert of or recorded an album of Gypsy/Russian music has done it, and every strolling violinist has played it (at least two dozen times a night)--play a C chord for the am6--and remember that it starts out slow, with a hold at the end of each phrase, and it goes faster and faster--there are several melodic phrases, each sounds a lot harder to play than it really is--it's the original "cheap trick" show off number--

Go find a recording of it--you'll get the idea--

Type Dve gitari into JC's Tunefinder and you'll get 8 results for the tune - pick your own abc (or a variety of other formats).

this song was arranged by Henry Lefkovitch in the thirties. it is an obscure book, but the Interlochen Music Library had a copy.
i think it is called Russian Gypsy Love songs and lullabies... i don't know though. and his name might be spelled with a "w" instead of a "v".

Lefkovitch had it in g minor.

Hello! Can anybody post the original lyrics in russian language? Cyrilic, of course because I can read russian pretty well - english transcription is a bit confusing. I just adore this song, there's fabulous performance by Cigani lvanovici on youtube so if one is interested...

Russian lyrics. I put the title (in Russian) into google.ru and plenty of refs come up.

Try this page (http://a-pesni.golosa.info/romans/2gitary.htm) for several variants of the lyrics and written melody with guitar chords. I've found this to be a reliable site, with source citations, multiple versions and, usually, sheet music scans. It is also perhaps the most complete collection of Russian folk song lyrics on the net.

The original words were written by Appolon Grigor'ev (1822-1864), to a Hungarian gypsy motif, though the music is often attributed to I. Vasil'ev.
