Banjo Legend Bobby Thompson passed away yesterday after a long illness. Bobby is credited with creating the Melodic style of playing. He is a former Bluegrass Boy.The list of people that he recorded with over the years is mind boggling. He was a regular on Hee Haw. His recording of Mason Williams' "Classical Gas" is 5 string classic.

A legend, who, even when very ill, took the time to be human. We corresponded a little.

I'll miss him.

Jimmy Martin, now Bobby Thompson.

Two legends within days. but the legacy of the pioneers of bluegrass will live on, thankfully.

Fortunately Bobby was able to release a CD of some of his music a few months ago. Appparently there is another in the works and they hope to include some of the famous first meeting jam with him and Bill Keith. He was also a tremendous guitar player. Bela Fleck was a frequent visitor while Bobby was ailing.

That's very sad news, he was a fantastic player and will be greatly missed.

Funny, apparently Bobby thought of himself more as a guitar player who messed around a bit on the banjo. Someone on another forum likened that to Jesus describing himself as a Fisherman who did a little preaching.
