We're off to the Orkneys - yippee!! - next Thursday as the Roaring 40's are appearing at the Festival, but staying for 10 days as it's an awful long way!!

Does anyone know of any folk clubs on the islands which we could get to?

Ali

The only one I've heard of is in Stromness but I'm not sure if it's on at Folk Fest time.

Johnny Mowatt, the organiser of said Fest should be able to help on this, look up Orkney Folk Festival website for contact details.

Incidentally, the Orcadians aren't very keen on the islands being called Orkneys, they prefer just Orkney or Orkney Islands, but they are great people, very friendly. Also not very keen on Westminster or even Scotland, they often seem to prefer being connected with Norway because of their historical connections and I think Norway is closer than London!

You'll have a great time there, it's one of the best!

hello Alio we will be there as well. Better get tickets NOW before they are all sold out.
Expect the place to be buzzing. We arrive Wednesday and leave Monday.
Hope to see you. Watch out for the Taggart and Wright T-shirts. Only half the duo is going Anne is still busy with college work, poor thing.
Try and catch Tarneybackle while you are there.

OH meant to say we are popping into the Taybank hotel in Dunkeld for a song or two tonight (Friday) on the way up. Usually a great night.

Hi Rob, Angie, Alio,

Looking forward to catching up with you in Orkney. We will be there on Wednesday.

Having seen the number of events Tarneybackle are involved in, I'm not sure if we'll be up for sessioning a week on Monday - lets see.

I was in The Taybank last week and bumped into an old school pal - Alan Steen, who I had not seen in over 25 years.

I can't make it today as I've got a solo gig in Auchterarder.

Remember to wrap up warm for Orkney - temperatures have been in the single figures.

Cheers

John

Hi All

What's the potential for a singaround/session on the Thursday evening ferry?
If you miss us at the Orkney F.F. you can see The Roaring Forties at Maryport Festival June 4 - 5 on the way back down.

All the best

Jim

Visit the museum in Stromness if you get a chance, It's at the western end of the main st, small but perfectly formed as they say.

Side note:   I'd love to visit Orkney. That's where my great-grandfather came from. He hired on with the Hudson's Bay Company in the mid-1850s, then settled on San Juan Island in Puget Sound. Maybe it reminded him of Orkney--but with trees.

There's a pub close to the ferry at Stromness that used to have a weekly hosted session on a Thursday night, but the night we were there last June (just after St Magnus Festival) there was a certain footie match on TV(?Portugal involved) which went to extra time and therefor B*ggered up any prospect of a decent live music session!

We'll definitely be going to the museum as the Roaring 40's are presenting Icebound there.

Think we might be staying near there, at the Stromness bay Hotel.

Can't wait!

The Auld Motor Hoose (I believe that's how they spell it) in Kirkwall often has good folk/rock, that gets more folk and then more rock as the evening goes on (they also have Dark Island Ale on tap).

I'm back from the Orkneys now - what a wonderful place! And the festival was superb - the young musicians there are just amazing! We're definitely going back there again.

Orkney was fantastic.

Highlights for us were the ceilidh at Harray and the closing concert.

This was followed by a singers session in The Stromness Hotel that included the fabulous Angie Wright, Stephen Quigg, Nick Keir, Doris Rougvie, The Linties, Sandy Marshall and others too many to mention.

The islands are beautiful and people so friendly. Add this to some superb musicians and great festival organisation - fantastic.

Cheers

John
