This is happening in early July and we are going, but though there are several stages and various musical entertainment, it's not a folk festival as such, so no singarounds or sessions as far as I know. Anyone else going so we can find a nice pub and start one? I@ve e-mailed the organisers and suggested it

Love Lynne

Oh, when I was there four years ago, they had plenty of shanty singers, none of whom seemed terribly bothered if people joined in.
Still, a terrific festival.

Shellback Chorus will be there. Several Catters are also Shells, but I'm not sure exactly who is in our lineup (apart from me!) - you should never be far from a singaround if you stick with the boys (and girls) in blue.

Vaughan,

Where are you starting from?

We are a train ride away (Brighton) and could get down for part of the goings-on perhaps.

Might be nice to see some of the people that I know.

I shall be there with Snuffy and others of the Shellback Chorus.
We should know where we will be meeting on the Friday night by a week or so beforehand, so I will post it...
As Snuffy says, keep close to the Shellbacks and there will be a singaround!
"I thought I heard the old man say ...!"

All being well I shall be sailing down from Maryport to Portsmouth on the Grand Turk as a crewmember. As such I have reserved a Hammock for my Guitar. I think that is a very good chance that singing will commence when the Crew of the Grand Turk get Shore Leave. The venue will be at some suitable hostelry as ordered too by Captain McDougle. Details and the whereabouts of the above mentioned venues could possibly be available from the Crew on the Grand Turk.

I'll be there on the Friday and the Saturday. And it's my birthday on the Saturday!!!

I don't have details of when all bands / groups etc are performing but I can tell you that New Scorpion Band are on Friday & Saturday, plus there is a brilliant Italian group called La Moresca Antica, who are on Saturday & Sunday - more details than that I don't have at the moment, but will probably receive at some point, in due course...

IFoS is a huge event based in the Naval Dockyard. You're unlikely to find anywhere in the Dockyard that would welcome a session. There are a number of small pubs within walking distance of the Dockyard gates but most cater mainly for tourists and are likely to be packed all weekend.

Your best bet for a session might be to take a 5 minute ferry trip across Portsmouth Harbour to Gosport and walk up Mumby Road for five minutes to The Clarence Tavern. Fine selection of real ales and the landlord Patrick welcomes session singers and musicians. The Gosport & Fareham Easter Festival always hold their farewell session there.

For good measure there's also a free music Festival on Walpole Park in the centre of Gosport all weekend. Not much traditional music unfortunately, mainly people like The Searchers, The Drifters and Chas 'n' Dave, but you get a good view of the IFoS festivities from the Gosport side of the harbour.

Hope this is helpful.

BUGGER BUGGER BUGGER BUGGER BUGGER

('scuse my french)

I can't go.    Neither can I go to the International Fleet Review at the start of the week. My boss won't let me miss my non-existent lessons to take the Cadets. Long way to go for a weekend, anyway.

:-((((

As far as a sing-song goes, there are lots of ships in the dockyard open to visitors if you don't mind the queues, including some sailing ships. Why not get on board one and ask them? The Mate (if it's a civvy ship or First Lieutenant (in a Naval vessel) is the man to find.

Hurrah!, A day off! What a wonderful sight, all those tall ships. Some great performers on the shanty stage, shame I could'nt stay longer, but work keeps getting in the way! Nelsons Blood were very good, missed the Shellbacks, but met up with Snuffy, and Mari later. Sorry I missed you Noreen, but as you saw, we were rushed off our feet! A big thankyou to The Chanty Cabin for coffee, and I will e-mail you for The copy of Shanties of The Severn Seas. With Pene Azul's permission, I'll post some images from the rigging of Grand Turk.

Wassail!! Chris

I agree Lynne - I was chuffed to bits to see Brian, because he hadn't been able to travel to Lancaster with them at Easter. (I was also able to explain to his daughters where he had been going every Easter for the last ten years or thereabouts!) It was cracking to meet you and e.p.n. (sniff, not even a mention... - how on earth did you spot me though?)

Aaaaagh! Sorry Blowzabella! Yes, it was great to meet Blowzabella, to whom I have chatted several times in Mudchat!

As far as how I spotted you goes....it was the New Scorpion band, you were selling their CDs, it seemed likely to be you. Besides, one develops an extra sense for spotting 'Catters after a while!

Yes, it was great to see Brian at Portsmouth. Unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to see the Portsmouth Shantymen in action. I was too busy tearing around in my little "buggy" from venue to venue. On occasions, I had to enlist several members of the public to push me over the damned humps!!
Anyway, I and my group, Baggyrinkle thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and meeting friends and fellow performers. We enjoyed singing even though we had to battle at times with the war going on out at sea!!
